Well my method may differ to others, but the basic steps are
1. Make sure your car is COOL... wait a good while after driving to do this...
2. look to the bottom of the radiator to the left you will see a plastic wing nut. turn this to the right and it should loosen.
3. When removed, you will start seeing fluid drop out. take something like a container etc and place below car if you don't want to havd fluid spilling where you don't want it going...
4. Open the radiator cap. Now it should run out faster than before. Give it a couple minutes.
5. Take your garden hose and place it over the mouth of the radiator where you refill it of course... and flush out the remaining fluid in the vehicle. do this for about a minute.
6. When done, replace the wingnut below the radiator
7. get a good quality coolant... there are some that can cause damage to plastic radiatiors or so i heard ibelieve glycol based is the good ones... better to get the gallon ones and not the concentrate if you're not used to this.
8. refill slowly until the ratiator is full. by full i mean the water is almost overflowing and bubbling has stopped. Replace the cap
9. now start your car. You might have to add more coolant. Check for any leakages at the wing nut. If you bought a green coolant it should be visible.
10. Make sure your overflow bottle is filled to the "full" mark. better yet try and drain this of the old fluid and place fresh fluid as well...
And that's pretty much it. Important tip. Drive it around for a while and then when it cools check your overflow again. many times because there is still air in the radiator it will take a bit fromthe overflow, giving you the impression that it has a problem... this may go on for days and all. Don't be alarmed, just monitor the coolant bottle after driving AND when the car is cool. Top up and you will be fine. |

MISHI explained it very well
just a couple additions to his method, from my experience

6. When done, replace the wingnut below the radiator
leave radiator cap open
start car and let idle
observe bubbles of trapped air in the water at the open radiator fill hole
let car idle for about 10 min
top up with plain water as the water level in the radiator drops
(this is to allow the plain water in the radiator to be passed thru the engine to flush out old water-coolant mix that remains in water passages in the block and hoses)
let car cool down once again
Repeat steps 1- 6 above
7. get a good quality coolant... there are some that can cause damage to plastic radiatiors or so i heard ibelieve glycol based is the good ones... better to get the gallon ones and not the concentrate if you're not used to this.
for CK Lancer\CS Lancer\ 2001-2005 K74 L200 I recommend Shell GlyoShell
8. refill slowly until the ratiator is full. by full i mean the water is almost overflowing and bubbling has stopped. Replace the cap

10. Make sure your overflow bottle is filled to the "full" mark. better yet try and drain this of the old fluid and place fresh fluid as well...
might as well remove overflow bottle and thoroughly wash out:
disconnect hose from overflow bottle and just slide out teh bottle
wash out and replace teh same way
And that's pretty much it. Important tip. Drive it around for a while and then when it cools check your overflow again. many times because there is still air in the radiator it will take a bit fromthe overflow, giving you the impression that it has a problem... this may go on for days and all.
