The question is simple:

Is the stock temperature gauge on the instrument cluster sufficient to monitor water temperature or should an aftermarket water temperature gauge be installed?

Why not?

Stock temperature gauges are usually damped...they either read normal or go into the hot zone when the car is overheating. They don't really give a progressive reading of temperature the way a good quality aftermarket gauge would.

I guess if you have a highly modified engine then it might be worth your while to install an aftermarket temperature gauge. On a stock engine, it might be a bit of an overkill.
