Users continue to note a series of issues with the iPhone OS 2.2 update.

Weak or non-existent signal As has been with the case with virtually ever iPhone OS update, some users are reporting a degradation of signal after the release of OS 2.2.

Displays your IMEI. No need to tap Call. IMEI is the unique identifier for your cell phone hardware. Together with your SIM information it identifies you to the provider network.

Account balance for prepaid iPhone.

*225# and tap Call.
Bill Balance. (Postpaid only)

*646# and tap Call.
Check minutes. (Postpaid only)

*#21# and tap Call.
Setting interrogation for call forwards. Discover the settings for your call forwarding. You'll see whether you have voice, data, fax, sms, sync, async, packet access, and pad access call forwarding enabled or disabled.

*#30# and tap Call.
Calling line presentation check. This displays whether you have enabled or disabled the presentation of the calling line, presumably the number of the party placing the call.

*#76# and tap Call.
Check whether the connected line presentation is enabled or not. State whether the connected line presentation is enabled or disabled. Presumably similar to the calling line presentation.

*#43# and tap Call.
Determine if call waiting is enabled. Displays call waiting status for voice, data, fax, sms, sync data, async data, packet access and pad access. Each item is either enabled or disabled.

*#61# and tap Call.
Check the number for unanswered calls. Show the number for voice call forwarding when a call is unanswered. Also show the options for data, fax, sms, sync, async, packet access and pad access.

*#62# and tap Call.
Check the number for call forwarding if no service is available. Just like the previous, except for no-service rather than no-answer situations.

*#67# and tap Call.
Check the number for call forwarding when the iPhone is busy. And again, but for when the iPhone is busy.

*#33# and tap Call.
Check for call control bars. Check all the usual suspects (voice, data, fax, sms, etc) to see whether barring is enabled or disabled for outgoing.

hahah i remember when i used to type that in on mkehy bnokia 5125 lol and select feildtest and say the matrix has taken over my phone lol Laughing

Just got me an iPhone and love it. I went and checked out the Storm and think it was rushed to market. The functionality and interface is sub-par at best.

^^ solved that little problem, (with Format Fix) now just need a way to update to 2.2 without having to reinstall my Cydia installed apps (again). Any suggestions?

for those with the caller id problem using 1.1.6 on 2.1 also install format fix via cydia

TouchArcade reports that the second-generation iPod touch’s processor runs at 532 MHz, while the iPhone 3G’s processor runs at 412 MHz.

Both the iPhone and iPod touch use an ARM processor capable of running at 620-667Mhz. However, it appears that Apple down-clocked the processor in production devics, presumably to conserve battery life.

Nearly a year ago, iPhone Atlas broke the news that iPhone OS 1.1.2 delivered slight boost in operating clock speed. iPhones running firmware/software version 1.1.1 displayed a clock speed of 400 Mhz and a bus speed of 100 MHz, whereas iPhones running firmware/software revision 1.1.2 displayed a clock speed of 412 MHz and a bus speed of 103 MHz.

As such, it’s possible that Apple will boost the iPhone and/or iPoud touch’s processor clock speed with a future software update. Given battery concerns, however, such a move may be unlikely.

Meanwhile, a Polish site has performed benchmarks of the first-generation iPod touch, second-generation iPod touch, first-generation iPhone and iPhone 3G. Their results (higher numbers are better), would appear to confirm the original finding:

Editors at MacWorld have begun to review the iPhone OS 2.2 update and are somewhat disappointed to see that certain desired improvements for business functionality have not been made. However, the order in which iPhone owners can now view podcasts is said to be an improvement.

As far as the business features go (and certainly some in this list would be very handy for personal use too), just some of the desired ones not part of the update that MacWorld notes include no on-device data encryption, passwords are limited to four-digit numeric PINs, no ability to synchronize notes or set up calendar items with the same scheduling controls as in Exchange and cut and paste. MacWorld even goes as far to say that since the 2.2 update does not accommodate more of the needs of the business community that the BlackBerry Storm has “a real chance to push the iPhone out of the enterprise, at least as a standard sanctioned device.”

Although the 2.2 update does not change much as far as business needs go, there are two main User Interface changes that MacWorld pinpoints. One is on the Safari browser - it now has a small search box on the same row as its URL box. MacWorld calls this design change “inelegant.” However, a welcome UI change according to MacWorld is that there is now a preference setting to turn off or on the iPhone's autocorrect feature when a user types. In addition to several minimal application changes the other big functional change is the new ability to download podcasts from Apple's iTunes Store while not having to sync via iTunes on the desktop.

Also as far as podcasts go, the older OS used to list podcasts with the newest at the top. Now the podcasts are listed in chronological order, as MacWorld describes, with the “oldest at the top. Which means you can start playback at any episode, and after that episode is finished, the next-most-recent one plays automatically.” This is also a welcome change.

MacWorld says it’s still too early to tell if the update will fix bugs in e-mail and browser operations.
