AUTO to MANUAL FWD conversion Checklist...

Postby MISHI » May 15th, 2007, 11:53 pm

This is for all who want to do a conversion to your existing Auto Mitsubishi 4 cylinder machine. this is your basic checklist

PARTS REQUIRED

1. Gearbox Assembly

2. Gearbox mount

3. Inner Axle cups

4. Flywheel ( 5 hole for the 4G1X, 6 Hole for early 4G6X & 7, hole for 4G9X and other 4G6X engines)

5. Clutch Disc (8" for most models up to 1.5, 8.5" on 1.6 up)

6. Pressure plate

7 Release bearing

8. Gearbox starter (MD 192227 for left side engines, MD301048 for right side I think)

9. Clutch master cylinder & lines (Hydraulic type)

10. Clutch Slave cylinder & lines (Hydraulic type)

11. Clutch Cable (Cable type)

12. Shifter assy with cables

13. Clutch pedal ( hook type for cable type, hole and pin for hydraulic )

14. Brake/ Accellerator assembly. (smaller brake pedal to fit with clutch pedal)

15. Gear oil (75w 90)

16. Axle grease

NOTE: Some models (CS especially) seem to have an issue where the Auto ECU will NOT work woth the conversion. Symptoms include, rough idling, stuttering on acceleration, stalling, etc)

This can be remedied by getting a manual ECU. CK and CB need not apply

ELECTRICALS

Electrical wise there isn't much you need to do.

First thing you will notice prior to installing the gearbox, is that the car will not start. In this case the inhibitor switch, (which is the small circular component on the tranny, which the transmission harness connects to)

1. Unplug the transmission ECU (If equipped)

2. Identify the harness that connects to the transmission inhibitor switch. Usually a small black rectangular connector with 2 large wires and about 5 or more smaller wires...

3. Find the two largest wires in the connection...a Black with Yellow Stripe and the Black with Red stripe

4. Make sure that the shifter is in Neutral and make sure also it's switched off. Take the two wires mentioned in step 3 and join them together. You should be able to start the car now...

REVERSE
The other smaller wires in the connector are used to illuminate the interior position switches (P, R, N, D, 2, 1) and also the reverse lights.

1. Locate the small red wire on the harness. Switch the vehicle to "on" position and check to see if the wire is producing power. Switch off car and check to see if it shuts off.

2. The next wire is a bit tricky. usually the other wire in earlier lancers is a small green colour and in the Ck models a brown wire. However if you don't know, then repeat step 5, but do not turn it off.

3. Put the gear shifter into reverse. (DO NOT START CAR!)

4. Run a feed from the small red wire and connect it to any of the other small wires in the connector. This will not cause any damage. Have someone looking in the rear of the vehicle to confirm which wire engages the lights.

5. Once you have all wires found, join them to the reverse switch on the gearbox. It will only have a 2 pronged connector. Most cases you may need to make a small connector as most used ones are removed with the harness.

6. With vehicle in "on" position, engage reverse with the shifter and have someone check to see if your light come on.

7. Once all wires connected, go ahead and clean up the installation. Solder where needed and use a good brand electrical tape. Seal away and you're good to go

Depends..... For the CB model lancer n total I spent $2300 or so I got a guy to do it for me for $600. That was in '04. And in the end I still ended up wiring my reverse lights and starter.

Cosmetically interior wise, I got lucky and got an original shifter knob and boot for $100.00 .Before this I was usuing those generic cortina style shifter boots...

Yep. There's a post around here about it. You have to use the Manual ECU... then you should be just fine.

like most, there will be some wiring added for the operation of the transmission to be in sync with engine performance. Generally it should be the same but you should try and get a wiring schematic to confirm.

Also the speed limit thing basically all local cars don't carry a limit, but as the parts come out of asia there's a limit of 180km.

yup

ive noticed that the JDM lancer carry a speed limiter up till 190Km/h and the dash usually goes to 180

my SDM dash goes beyond 210 and ive run the car past 200 on the 3rd gear.....

the reason im skeptical to use M/T harness is because the car it came out of had some ratch wiring done to it so i dont want to have to deal with no electrical problems now or later........

as for the wiring the harness is almost the same except one connector need to be cut and taped in.......

like i said ill update it wen the install is complete

I know this is an old post but i have just completed this conversion on my 89 Mirage/Lancer C62A model and things to note were that needed made were.
1.There is no holes for the clutch master cycl in the fire wall.
2.There is no support bracket for the 2 bolts on top of the clutch pedal box.
3.There is no cutout at the base of the firewall for the shifter linkages to come out (stamped outline is there).
The bolt holes which bolt down the shifter plate to the floor don't line up to the auto ones.
The rest of the conversion was basically swapping over and all i had to do extra was to Join the 2 big wires together to start it. Drive shafts even fitted as well.
The reverse was easy as there was an unused plug on the loom, under the air cleaner taped up, which plugged in the box.
Thanks for the help
Glenn

Like it was explained... it is a checklist... just what was needed to do a conversion.

Different mitsus will have different situations to deal with: some already have holes pre cut and some don't.

i know that MISHI....
i also did my conversion using this exact list....
i got all the wrong pieces but still....LOL

reason i asked is cuz different years have holes drilled in differerent places....
eg: when i was lookin for a conversion for my ck i came across a crashed CK...
everything looked correct but when we pulled the shifter boot we seen a metal based shifter assay....
turns out they welded a CB shifter assay into the car....cuz the holes werent lining up....
later on i found out that the there are CB (late model liberos) which came with the plastic based shifter... which would work on CB/CK/CS...

i was never fortunate to chook a C62 lancer to know where the holes are drilled so i asked ....

It was an exact same model Mirage C62A but a manual model, they have different letters after C62A on the firewall tag compared with the Auto model. Both were JDM and imported here in NZ. The NZ new model was called a lancer.
