Toyota OEM oil is 10W30 for all VVTI engine. If you are not having a problem with the Shell 5W40 then do not switch. 55000 km is low mileage as I know a few NZE with over 275000 km using 10W30 with no issues.

The thing is, since i got my car i used Shell 5W40, but my new mechanic suggested that i use 15W30 Castrol regular since i usually service at every 5000km,so i went ahead with his suggestion. i have decided to go back however with a fully synthetic oil so fielding around for opinions on the type of oil i should use. i decided on Mobil 1 10W30. What do u all think?

the firm recommends 10W30 full synthetic for the 1nz-fe (1500cc), I currently use mobil 1 clean 5000 and it works fine, esp for removing sludge. It has a stronger detergent than the mobil 1 high performance oil thus possesses superior cleaning capability.

Guys i did a test API in UTT labs recently on 10w30 mobil oil and it failed , flash and fire points failed both tests for 10w30, the best oil i c some one list so far is the 5w 50 castrol syntec. infact i brought redline and it failed too it was flashin too early soooo...

if u understand oil u will know that the 5 is for cold resistance to flow, and 50 is the heat that it can stand up to, so its an allround good oil for our climate..

i personally used to use 5w50 synthec castrol until price raise then i switched to 20w50 gtx. el chepo oil. i just change oil 2500km on my turbo engine. Smile

^ 50 body oil is not recommended for this particular application, the technicians in toyota advise that 10 body oil is most suitable, regardless of the brand.

the grade of the oil indicates the viscosity of the oil within a specified temp range...theoretically 50 body should be suitable for our climate, but for whatever reason (practical or otherwise) toyota advises to use 10 body oil.

based on your tests, what was the flash point of both the redline and mobil 1?

38 degrees shy of API specs for mobil and redline 25 degree shy. cant remember the actual values , jes google dem . my point is dat a person cud ues his/ her discretion and use whatever oil they want , based upon credible findings in the CONDITIONS the vehicle is or supposed to be working in . its ur choice at the end of d day Wink

as far as i know the techs in toyota arent knowledgeable as men like yancy, prentice etc, shinakuma in toyota forums is ah bess tuner with Mech ENG knowledge u cud ask him if u want.. Neutral

i agree with you in that the toyota techs (even those who have trained in Japan etc) may not have researched the properties of the oils themselves....this is evident in the fact that none of them actually recommend any particular brand of oil.....at the end of the day is up to u to do a lil research and decide for one's self which oil best suits your application......which in my case the oil i using good ftw, due to the fact that it controlling (to a certain extent) the amount of sludge buildup in my engine.
