First off, I have lights in my U14 dash that gone, like D, the OD light, the illumination light on the temperature gouge side. Anyone can replace all the lights in my gauge cluster and give me an idea of the cost. My mech starting to duck small work on the car and trying to get me to change the engine instead of minor maintainance.

Secondly, at 250000Km, what are some of the things that you would change/ check up on. I do regular maintainance, but I hear people change seals, bearings, brake lines and caliper overhaul, replacing muffler, and other things in their car that I ain't even touch as yet. Any suggestions on keeping my high milage car running good, and things to look out for atht this age?

I just followed the local dealer (N&M) and manufacturer's service schedule for my car and it went 230,000km before I overhauled the engine (oversize rings, new gaskets, new bearings, etc.) using OEM parts. And when I overhauled it it was only burning a litre of oil every 5,000km. I then continued following the service schedule and kept it until 343,000km after which it was sold (the car was 10 years old).

With the brakes, I never changed anything other than the front disc pads, since the rear brake shoes never needed changing. I never had cause to touch the exhaust system. For the suspension, I changed the shocks, stabiliser bar rubbers and a knuckle joint only on one occasion. A velocity joint boot was changed once, with the original velocity joints never requiring replacement. The car was only re-painted once during the time I had it, with no rust whatsoever.

My advice, just continue the preventative maintenance schedule that you are following and the car will last you a long time.
