Updated the carrier logo suggestion to include Digicel

Can use any .png image in place as well if you want to make it a little more personal. Though its suggested you make it with a top to bottom length of 20 pixels & maintain the aspect ratio with it.

Google has announced Google Sync Beta for the iPhone. Google Sync allows over-the-air syncing of your Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar events to your iPhone.

One of the hardest parts about switching phones is getting your address book and calendar to your new device. We’re making that process a little easier by releasing a beta version of Google Sync for the iPhone and Windows Mobile phones as well as a contacts-only version for phones that support SyncML.

For iPhone and Windows Mobile devices, Google Sync allows you to get your Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar events to your phone. Once you set up Sync on your phone, it will automatically begin synchronizing your address book and calendar in the background, over-the-air, so you can attend to other tasks. Sync uses push technology so any changes or additions to your calendar or contacts are reflected on your device in minutes. The connection is always on so you don’t have to manually sync your phone after Sync has been set up. This means that when your colleague changes the time of the TPS report cover sheets meeting, you’ll know about it right away.

Since Sync is a two-way service, you can make changes on your phone or in your Google Account. Your calendar and contacts are always up-to-date, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. Also, since your data is automatically backed up to your Google Account, it’s securely stored even if you lose your phone.

For devices that support the open SyncML protocol, Google Sync will allow for two-way contacts synchronization. If you’re a BlackBerry user, a version of Google Sync is already available.

Folks at Gizmodo have published three concepts of Apple’s new iPhone.

iPhone Pro:
The first one was designed by Mat Brady. He called it iPhone Elite, an iPhone with 60GB of storage, true 16:9 aspect ratio, slide-out keyboard, one megapixel front camera for iChat, and a high quality camera, with good lenses, optical zoom, and video capability.

Folks at Gizmodo fixed the keyboard to make it more compact, removed some unnecessary keys and added a direction pad and two buttons to make the new iPhone a true Nintendo DS competitor. They called their tweaked version iPhone Pro as you can see below:

iPhone - MacBook Inspired:
The second one was designed by Jim Young and as you can see below was inspired by MacBook. His iPhone included 3G, GPS, Front camera for iChat, Removable battery, 3.2 Megapixel camera, Video, 32 GB.

iPhone - MacBook Air Inspired:
The latest concept of Apple’s new iPhone is designed by Rodolphe Desmare. As you can see from the curves and tapering that it has been inspired by MacBook Air.

A couple of weeks back, it was announced that Windows Live Hotmail began phasing in POP3 access to their accounts on a country by country basis. Recently one of (if not the) biggest countries to receive this feature, the United States, got it.

So if you have a Windows Live Hotmail account which is based in the United States (or has the US as the country) & you own an iPhone/iPod touch you can now receive your email on it without having to resort to alternative means… . Although unlike those alternative means you currently can’t manage existing Inbox folders (if any) nor will delelted messages be reflected on your computer’s/laptop’s version of your inbox.

To Enable:

After typing the info and then tapping next, you should be told that you need a Windows Live Hotmail Plus account to use, but it still works regardless.

First there was the Five Column SpringBoard, now there’s the Five Row SpringBoard called FiveIrows.

When installed, it will automatically adjusts your icons so that you are able to fit five rows on your SpringBoard. It also adds a theme to WinterBoard called FiveIRows Page Dots which will also adjust your page dots to fit better with the five rows of icons. I also noticed that when installed, it stops your icons from wiggling when in “move” mod. Not a huge issue but, reminds me of a lot of other mods of this type…they all seem to stop the wiggling.

FiveIRows cannot be activated/deactivated via WinterBoard. As soon as you install it, it is initiated. When uninstalled, it removes the FiveIrows mod and the FiveIRows Page Dots theme from Cydia. I also found that when I uninstalled the mod, it nicely moved the icons that were in my “fifth” row to another page. I was a little nervous about what was going to happen when I uninstalled the app and didn’t move the icons off the fifth row (I feared that they were going to be deleted!). But, to my surprise…it handled it very well…the icons were just moved to a free space on my SpringBoard. I will be honest, I haven’t done a ton of testing of this mod but, from what I have tested so far…it seems to work nicely.

This mod is available through the Touch-Mania source which can be added through Cydia.

Leaked photos on Thursday purport to reveal a new iPhone design with an unfamiliar model number and a more subdued, matte black surface.

The images, first sent to iPod Observer in early form but followed up by a couple of larger versions atMacRumors, show what at first looks to be the familiar, tapered back of iPhone 3G but give signs that they may represent an entirely different model.

The empty shell appears to have official model markings for a 16GB iPhone but lists a new model number, A1303, that doesn’t correlate to existing iPhone models with the same capacity. Existing 16GB iPhone 3G units often have the model number A1241.

More tellingly, the example put on display drops the glossy coat that has defined both black and white iPhone 3G models since launch. It’s instead a dull, matte finish not unlike the back of current aluminum iMac models. The tip to Mac Rumors implies that the finish is also textured and less prone to slipping out of one’s hand.

Supposedly originating from China, the photos are difficult to authenticate and still carry the risk of being identified as fakes. However, they’re posted by the Observer in the belief that its history with sources supports this latest leak; tellingly, the news site was one of the first to have a photo of what was later confirmed to be the iPhone 3G’s back.

There have yet to be additional rumors supporting the change in case design, though Apple has been steadily dropping hints of a widely anticipated iPhone revision, including a hardware identifier string for an unreleased iPhone 2,1 and statements by both Apple’s Phil Schiller and carrier partners that allude to a June refresh.

At the GSMA Mobile World Congress, Adobe announced Palm is joining the Open Screen Project - a broad industry initiative dedicated to enabling standalone applications and full web browsing across televisions, desktops and mobile devices taking advantage of Adobe Flash Platform capabilities.

Today at Mobile World Congress 2009, Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer announced that Windows phones will feature two new services: My Phone, to sync text messages, photos, video, contacts and more to the Web; and Windows Marketplace for Mobile, a new marketplace that will provide direct-to-phone mobile applications and can be accessed from both the phone and the Web.

Androinica has posted some important notes on the Android Market.

1. Returns are short but possible.
Any app purchased from the Android Market can be returned within 24 hours from the time of purchase.

2. Reinstalls are free.
The Android Market allows users to reinstall purchased apps an unlimited number of times.

3. Upgrades aren’t done through the Market.
The official policy states that any upgrades must be obtained directly from the Developer as the Market has “no upgrade functionality.”

4. Sexually Explicit Material is a no go.
The market does not permit nudity, sexually explicit material, or apps that drive traffic to commercial pornography sites.

5. You’re on your own.
Google makes it clear that they bear no responsibility in billing disputes related to app purchases.

Should Apple Offer 24-Hour Return Policy on iPhone Apps?

Have you paid for an iPhone app on the App Store only to find out it was completely useless or wasn’t worth the price? Unfortunately, once you have purchased an iPhone app, you are stuck with it forever as there is no return policy.

Google which has a similar App Store for its Android platform called Android Marketplace seems to have a much customer-friendly policy.

Google will let Android phone users return apps within 24 hours of purchase for a full refund.

Google’s Android Market Business and Program Policies states:

Returns: You have 24 hours from the time of purchase (not download) to return any applications purchased from Android Market for a full refund of any applicable fees. The option to return an application within this timeframe will be made available to you through the Android Market user interface.

It would have been good if Apple had a more customer-friendly policy for the App Store like Google especially since iPhone developers currently cannot offer demo versions of their iPhone app which would have allowed users to try the apps before buying them.

iPhone developers have started offering Lite version of their iPhone apps so users can try the free version before buying them but as Icon Factory’s Craig Hockenberry points out in his article on pricing iPhone apps (a must-read for iPhone developers) the rules might not be applicable for all apps:

“There are two basic rules you need to follow when making a Lite version of your product:

The product must be fully functional. The application must stand on its own and be useful.
The user should not be inundated with “up-sell” reminders. Showing BUY NOW every 5 minutes is the quickest way I know to get rejected by the App Store.
The hard part, of course, is how to limit functionality. For many games, it’s pretty easy: you just limit the number of levels the user gets to play for free. A similar technique can be used for applications that track data by limiting the number of records that can be added.

But there are many applications that don’t fall into these neat categories. One such application is our own Frenzic. Due to the game’s open-ended nature, there’s not much we can do to set “levels.” Until there is some kind of demo mechanism on the App Store, we’re stuck with advertising, good reviews and word-of-mouth.”

While reports have suggested that Apple may attend next year’s CES to “sit amongst its competition” in consumer electronics, the company has elected not to attend the GSMA Mobile World Congress being held in Barcelona this week. That hasn’t stopped the iPhone from dominating talk at the mobile conference.

Journalists seem to find it hard to cover any news coming out of the event without mentioning Apple’s smartphone by name as a point of reference, even when the announcements seemingly have nothing to do with Apple.

Skype’s new bundling deals with handset makers Nokia and Sony Ericsson were nearly dismissed for being irrelevant because the addition of VoIP applications would only make their phones less attractive to the US mobile providers who control what units are sold here. The exception cited by reports is Apple’s iPhone, which negotiated the availability VoIP over WiFi without losing AT&T’s blessing or subsidy.
The announcement of Cisco’s new WebEx software for modern BlackBerry, Nokia, and Samsung models also had to point out that the iPhone 3G had already gained those features via an earlier software release.
Nokia’s unveiling of its Ovi software store and Microsoft’s announcement of its plans to open SkyMarket later this year both required comparisons to Apple’s barn storming iPhone App Store, which has already moved a half billion apps since it opened last year.
Similarly, Sony Ericsson’s announcement of MediaGo, a new service that will enable users to upload full length movies to specific models of the company’s phones via a PC, required comparison to the iPhone’s integration with iTunes, which has been able to do that since it first appeared in 2007. MediaGo transcodes various videos into a format that will playback well on mobile devices, avoiding phone compatibility errors such as “incompatible format,” “unsuitable frame rate,” or “incorrect aspect ratio.” iPhone users don’t ever see those errors because Apple thought to specify a standardized, optimized video format for the iPhone: H.264; iTunes doesn’t allow incompatible video formats to be loaded onto the iPhone without first passing through QuickTime for transcoding.
The next release of Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5, planned for the end of 2009, as well as the introduction of new devices planned to run it, including new models from LG, also required comparisons with the features already present in the iPhone OS.
The Mobile World Congress seems to serve as a worldwide report card outlining how well the iPhone’s competitors (apart from Google’s largely MIAAndroid) are doing in their efforts to catch up to Apple.

Speak software and carry a big schtick

Apple’s conspicuous absence from the annual mobile conference should come as no surprise. While the company achieved spectacular sales figures at the launch of the iPhone 3G, Apple is still a small newcomer in the mobile industry and guards its public announcements carefully.

Much of the recent attention related to the iPhone has stemmed from the company’s ability to implement the first very successful mobile software store, resulting in thousands of apps that turn the iPhone into anything that third party developers can imagine. While other mobile platforms claim larger software libraries, they can’t claim games from top tier developers, nor similar flocks of attention from other mobile programmers attracted to the revenues Apple’s secured store is collecting to fuel new development.

Apple also leverages its ability to whip up excitement among consumers to gain media attention right at the moment its new hardware releases are ready. That affords the company far more visibility than if it were to regularly issue piecemeal details on upcoming hardware releases.

With the third major revision to the iPhone expected in June, any announcements made this week by Apple would likely result in only dampening interest in the current model while robbing the company of any element of surprise once the next revision is ready to hit the market. Apple’s dramatic releases provide the company with surges of attention right when it helps the company most.

Despite representing just 1% of the global market for all mobile phones, Apple briefly became the third-largest mobile phone supplier in terms of revenue during the company’s fiscal fourth quarter of 2008.

That peak in sales at the launch of the iPhone 3G also gave Apple over 17% of the worldwide smartphone market according to Canalys, eclipsing even red hot RIM in unit shipments worldwide. It also pushed Apple over its goal (well ahead of schedule) of selling ten million units in its second year, something many analysts were expressing doubts about the company meeting even as late as early 2007.

The eBay Application for the iPhone/iPod Touch got a major update today. It now supports messaging, a key feature that was missing from the previous version. The update did refresh the look a bit, with a new Home Screen Appearance and update some of the previous buttons.

The new eBay application for the iPhone is specially designed to run natively on the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. The GSMA and 17 mobile operators plan to develop a universal Micro-USB charging solution that would appear by January 1, 2012. The group includes AT&T, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, T-Mobile, and Vodafone. The change would make things simpler for the consumer, who could use the same charger with all future phones and charge anywhere with any available unit.

The chargers will boast a 4-star or higher efficiency rating in order to be three times more energy-efficient than an unrated charger and consume 50% less stand-by energy. The GSMA estimates greenhouse gas reduction by 13.6 to 21.8 million metric tons as the replacement rate for existing chargers decreases.

Noticeably absent from the list of supporters is Apple. Its ubiquitous dock connector was introduced on the third-generation iPod in 2003 and has appeared on every iPod and iPhone since. By the time of the 2012 deadline, the dock connector will have been around for almost a decade.

In a possible nod to the iPhone’s exemption, the GSMA targets only “majority” adoption by 2012. The BBC notes that the move may be a response to pressure from the European Commission, which has observed more than 30 different kinds of chargers in use across the European Union.

Two weeks ago it sounded like Adobe was rounding a corner on its way to delivering Flash for the iPhone, but new comments from the software maker are anything but reassuring.

An Adobe spokeswoman told Dow Jones Tuesday (today) that Flash Lite needs more help from Apple than iPhone maker has traditionally afforded its developers. She then refused to confirm whether Apple and Adobe are working together, possibly signaling that the two are not working as closely as previously thought.

Late last month, Adobe chief Shantanu Narayen said the iPhone maker was collaborating with his company on a "hard technical challenge." His comment, "The onus is on [Adobe] to deliver," seems to disagree with the spokeswoman's assertion that Adobe still needs more help.

The software maker recently released a new version of Flash Lite that supports high definition videos, but not the iPhone.

Apple declined comment for the Dow Jones report; however, its continuing reticence to help Flash Lite along should come as no surprise. The Cupertino-based iPhone maker has long encouraged developers to use open standards on the device in an effort to promote interoperability and cross platform independence for the next generation of internet applications.

The iPhone and Mac maker has been disappointed in the past with Adobe prioritizing its Windows plug-in at the expense of the Mac version, which fell behind in performance and features. Apple was likely trying to avoid the same problems spilling over to the iPhone, backing up Steve Jobs' criticisms of the "too slow" desktop version and the crippled capability of Flash Lite, which can't fully run content written for the desktop. It could also be prone to memory leaks and overworking the processor.

An Apple developer document published two Junes ago listed Flash as an "unsupported technology" and told devs, "You'll want to avoid using Flash and Java for iPhone content. You'll also want to avoid encouraging users to download the latest Flash on their iPhone, because neither Flash nor downloads are supported by Safari on iPhone."

The guidelines went on to recommend CSS, JavaScript, and Ajax instead. Apple has taken up an effort to remove Flash from its own corporate site and other products, and it teamed with Google to use the H.264 standard instead of Flash on the iPhone's YouTube app.

Taken together, these signs suggest an iPhone with Flash support is highly unlikely despite Adobe's persistence.

The WeatherIcon mod received a few updates overnight. The update to version 1.8.4 makes a few changes to the application that you will want to know about. The most obvious change is that it removes the icon theme from the package. So, when you update to version 1.8.4 you will no longer see a weather image just the actual weather in degrees. In order to have a weather images, you will need to install either the Katra WeatherIcon theme or the Klear WeatherIcon theme based on which weather images you prefer (see screenshots below). Both of these themes are available through the david.ashman.com source.

The update also adds a new feature, the ability to put the current temp and weather icon on your status bar. In order to enable this features, you will need to ssh into the

folder on your iPhone or iPod Touch and change the ShowStatusBarImage and ShowStatusBarTemp options to True (they default as False). Or, if you are looking for an easier way to turn on the status bar icons, Supreme Preferences was updated overnight to include these options. In order to use Supreme Preferences, you will need to install the application, activate it via WinterBoard, go into your stock Settings application, select Supreme Preferences, select the Applications option, select the Jailbroken option, select the Weather Icon option and then turn on both the Status Bar Image and Status Bar Temperature options. You can then go back to your SpringBoard and the temp and weather icon will display on your status bar. It will display whatever theme icons you have turned on, Katra or Klear. Either way you do it…it is a pretty cool mod!
