Users, in droves, continue to report a bevy of issues after the update to iPhone OS 2.2. Among the most serious and widespread problems: disappearing applications (both Apple’s and third-party), loss of WiFi connectivity, loss of 3G or EDGE signal strength and an inability to sync with iTunes.

Downgrading to iPhone OS 2.1 If you are experiencing intolerable issues after the update to iPhone OS 2.2 and would like to attempt a downgrade to iPhone OS 2.1, you can try the following procedure. Note, however, that they procedure may not work, and you may be forced to restore your iPhone with OS 2.2, potentially losing data in the process.

Download iPhone OS 2.1 IPSW
Turn off your iPhone by holding down the sleep/wake button.
After the phone is off and hold the sleep/wake and home buttons at the same time for 10 seconds.
Release the sleep/wake button; continue to hold down the home button until iTunes detects the iPhone in “recovery mode.” Your iPhone is now in DFU mode.
Hold down the option key on a Mac or alt key on a PC and click “Restore” in iTunes.
Locate the IPSW file and select it.
Disappearing apps (cont.) Dozens if not hundreds of users have now reported a problem in which various iPhone applications, both third-party and included, disappear after the update to iPhone OS 2.2. In some cases, the afflicted iPhones were jailbroken, in others, they were not.

A sampling of reports from iPhone Atlas readers:

“When I upgraded, all my apps non-original apps disappears, except for google! When I tried to re-download and then resync them onto my iphone, only some of them would appear. After talking to support, we tried starting my computer (she said this was happening to some people) and then syncing. This added a couple more, but about 10 were still sitting in my itunes and refusing to sync.”
“After the os 2.2 update. Safari suddenly disappeared. Syncing etc didn’t work or resolve the issue. I had to do a restore to get things back to normal.”
“After upgrading to 2.2 the iphone camera app disappeared, and every program that uses the camera stopped working also. Restoring the phone brought it back but then the next Sync made it go away again. Very annoying. How much QA did they do before they released this upgrade? I can understand third party apps breaking but not the base applications.”
“I also have had a problem with a missing application. My camera application has disappeared and I tried restoring it, and it appeared for about five minutes, let me take one picture, then was suddenly gone again.”
Possible fix: Setup as a new phone Try setting your iPhone up as a new phone then re-downloading an missing applications. To do this, perform a restore in iTunes, then choose “setup as a new phone.”

WiFi cannot connect (cont.) Perhaps the most widely reported problem after disappearing applications is one in which WiFi connectivity fails after the iPhone OS 2.2 update.

Reports from readers:

“Slowly updated my iPod Touch to 2.2 and now wifi does not connect. Get the check mark but no ip address is assigned. Tried renewing and rebooting. This is a step backwards.
“I cannot connect to my wifi at home and I never had a problem in the past.”
In some cases, “forgetting” the currently configured network and then reconfiguring it can resolve the issue. Other potential fixes include:

Switch the router to WPA2
Remove all spaces from the WPA pass phrase
Remove all security from the router until a stable connection is attained then reconfigure the security
Cannot sync with iTunes Several users have reported an issue in which they are unable to sync with iTunes after the iPhone OS 2.2 update.

One reader writes:

After the update to OS 2.2, iTunes is unable to completely connect to iPhone. iTunes message says I must restore iPhone to original settings. iTunes shows iPhone on side menu, but only partially. And I have no access to its contents. (For example, iTunes is unable to say the memo usage, or even the iPhone’s name. It just shows ‘iPhone’ and nothing more, instead of ‘Andre’s iPhone’ and 2 GB used memo.”

There are a number of potential fixes for this issue. Among the most commonly successful:

Reinstall iTunes 7.6.1 (Mac/Windows) Simply download the package, run the installer and restart.
Check the USB port Make sure that your iPhone is connected to a normally powered USB 2.0 port. If you’re using a hub, try connecting the iPhone directly to the computer or vice versa. Also try switching ports.
Turn off auto-lock On your iPhone, tap Settings > General > Auto-Lock and set it to “Never” then re-attempt syncing.
Restore the iPhone Click the Restore button under the Summary tab. Restoring the phone will erase contacts, calendars, photos and other data on the phone (including any third-party applications), but will restore automatically backed-up information including text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, etc. Some users have reported that restoring the iPhone, but not restoring custom settings data from the computer-stored backup alleviates this issue. Note that you’ll lose text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, etc with this method, though you can restore them anytime by simply doing another restore and choosing to push the backup to the phone.
Play the isolation game Leave your iPhone connected (or plug it in if it is not already connected). Deselect all sync options. This requires going to the Info, Ringtones, Music, Photos, Podcasts and Video tabs and unchecking every box. Sync your iPhone. Note that this may result in deletion of some data from the iPhone. Re-attempt a sync with all of your normal options. If it fails, try checking only one or two sync options and repeat the process until you find the problematic sync data.

Some people don't like iTunes. Some other people decided to start discussing how to sync music to their libraries on the iPhone and iPod Touch without iTunes. Some more folks at Apple decided that iTunes must be the only option and shut down development discussion for syncing without iTunes.

Users over at Bluwiki were having discussions on a few pages about how to sync media onto the iPhone and iPod Touch from sources other than iTunes. According to the Apple lawyers these discussions violated the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) which is in place to stop the writing of code and sharing of information that could potentially be used to bypass copyright protection (funny that Apple is getting rid of DRM at the same time).

Unfortunately for all of you interested in syncing media from places other than iTunes Bluwiki has complied to Apple's demands and taken down the pages as requested by Apple. On the plus side it is possible that discussion may be able to resume in the future since the Electronic Frontier Foundation has agreed to represent Bluwiki on the matter.

This is also bad news for those of us that have been watching the progress of PwnPlayer eagerly. A possible future update to PwnPlayer would include the ability to sync music downloaded via dtunes or mewseek into your iTunes Music library on the iPhone. Undoubtedly if that feature was ever completed PwnPlayer would become a target in Apple's legal sites for the same reasons mentioned above Sad

The CallerID Fix Collection by Frank8 (iSpazio Repo) has been released for the iPhone 2.2 firmware. This patch will enable Caller ID for those countries not supported by the iPhone.

Number match betwen received Calls or SMS and the Address book happens only
if some informations can be ignored, international prefix, trunk prefix … generally
don't saved because unnecessary to make a call. Those informations are extrapolated from a database using as access key the country code in the Sim-card, if you see the number and not the name may be those informations are wrong or missing. This application essentially replace the templates file with a corrected version.

(Yes Trinidad & Tobago is one of these countries supported by this Fix.)

Battery Drain Under iPhone OS 2.2: Fixes

Several users have reported diminished battery life under iPhone OS 2.2. A pair of Apple Discussion threads–one with 59 replies (“iPhone Update 2.2 Drastically Reduces Battery Life”), the other with 78 (“Battery drain since upgrading to 2.2″)–chronicle the issue. Sample reports include:

“Yesterday, I went all day (12 hours that is) without recharging. Last night I upgraded to 2.2. Today, after being off the charger for 4 hours, it is down to 20%.”

Report 2 wrote:

“[...] happens with both iPhones we have after 2.2 upgrade. When we went to bed, iPhones were fully charged, and in the morning, 10% of the battery was left.”

Report 3 wrote:

“Same problems here. I have one me.com account and one exchange account - both set to push. Power drain after about 6 hours. This is not good for a mobile device. Blackberry went days without recharge.”

Report 4 wrote:

“I updated yesterday night to 2.2 and left the iphone charge over night. I took the phone this morning and went to work. I did not use it until mid day when I went for lunch. I wanted to check my emails and saw the battery was fully empty. I could not use it anymore.”

One fix that has proven successful for some users experiencing this problem: delete then re-establish any push-capable accounts (Exchange, MobileMe). Failing that, delete and re-establish all email accounts.

We’ve published a number of potential battery-life boosters, including:

Drain the battery completely Use your iPhone until the battery dies completely (indicated by a battery icon appearing on the screen when the sleep/wake button is pressed), then fully recharge the device. It appears that the full discharge may reset circuitry that prevents a full charge from occurring, despite iconic indication of a full charge.

Turn off location services It appears that the Maps application and some third-party applications that use GPS functionality fail to power down the necessary hardware components when they are no longer in use. Navigate to Settings > General > Location Services and turn these services off when you are not using Maps or another location-enabled app.

Turn off Push then restart The iPhone 3G’s Push functionality for Exchange and MobileMe accounts can destroy battery life. Turn this option off in “Settings” then restart your iPhone by powering it off then on.

Restore the iPhone with original settings Launch iTunes and select the second option in the “Version” section on the Summary page for your iPhone. This restore process will erase your iPhone software and data, including all settings, which can be restored later via iTunes.

More Undocumented iPhone OS 2.2 Features

“Update All” back The ability to update all applications with the press of one button–a feature that was disable in iPhone OS 2.1–is back in iPhone OS 2.2.

Locked screen screenshots iPhone OS 2.2 now offers the ability to snap images of the locked screen. To take a screenshot: while holding the home button, press and release the sleep/wake button. A screen flash indicates that that the image was captured.

Although Macs and iPhones were seen as Apple's ticket to a healthy holiday quarter, the electronics maker has reportedly been struck by surprising demand for iPods and is now scurrying to restock some of its reseller channels.

"What started out as stock outs on the iPod touch at Amazon.com from Black Friday is starting to spread to other retailers and iPod models," said Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu, who drew attention to the sudden shortages in a report to clients earlier this week.

He notes that Amazon.com, one of Apple's highest volume iPod resellers, has just recently pushed lead times on the 8 GB second-generation iPod touch to three to five weeks from 11 days while the 16 GB model remains at three to five weeks.

In addition, the analyst's distribution and channel checks show that the iPod touch, iPod nano, and even iPod shuffle are seeing spotted shortages on different colors and capacities this week across several retailers including Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, and Crutchfield.com.

"Frankly, we find these sell-outs on iPods surprising given how difficult the macroeconomic environment is, putting a crimp on consumer spending," he told clients in a new report Wednesday. "From our assessment, we believe iPod is holding up better than most, due to its relatively low [selling price] and strong consumer understanding of the value it provides."

Despite concerns that iPods may be approaching a saturation point in the consumer market, Wu said the players' recent momentum gives him confidence in his estimate that Apple will sell around 21 million of the devices during its December quarter.

That would represent a 90% increase over the company's September quarter iPod sales and a mere 5 percent decline from last December quarter when sales hit an all-time high of 22.12 million units.

Wu, who maintains a Buy rating on Apple shares, continues to believe the Cupertino-based company is one of the better investments during the tough economy given its strong fundamentals.

"We find the risk-reward favorable for longer-term investors at 12x our calendar 2009 free cash flow (FCF) estimate," he said. "We see upside to our price target of $120 based on a conservative 15x multiple."

Note: While Amazon.com continues to reflect availability of the 8GB and 16GB second-generation iPod touch, sales of those devices are being channeled through its affiliate partners and are not a reflection of its own inventories. As such, iPods continue to dominate the top 13 spots on the retailer's Top Sellers list of MP3 players, helped by discounts of between 8% and 38% on third- and fourth-generation iPod nanos.

Wizzard Media announced today that video embedded on internet websites using the Wizzard Player can now be viewed on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Currently, Apple devices due to their lack of support cannot access most Flash video players. When visiting a video website using the iPhone, the screen appears blank where the video would normally be. Wizzard Media joins YouTube in supporting this feature and is extending its podcast advertising platform to the iPhone in January 2009.
