|
|
SO please dont turn this into a off vs On axis war on tweeters.
In YOUR car how, were are your tweeters mounted? pics if possible and what do YOU personally like about your choice of placement?
Not asking for tecnhical war here!
Just interested in peoples individual choices.
I currently have my tweeters in my
A pillars almost at "shoulder level" firing across the dash at each other (off-axis).
I find that my stage height is High, but im thinking of trying a Kick panel install (On axis) with pods! |

So whats the point of the thread if you dont want the science behind wht on axis vs off axis. What are you trying to find out? Which sounds better? That's subjective to the user's personal opinion and it may not help you if you are not interested in the why and only the how.
Im my system, I Have my tweeters firing toward each each other. Their alignment is perfectly perpendicular to the vehicle's longitudinal axis, done so by laser alignment.
The reason for painstakingly getting this right, is to take into effect the benefits of speaker beaming, off axis response, and attenuation due to angulation.
Kick panel mounted only tweeters, esp on axis, will do 2 things, regardless of brand of tweeter: 1. Give a rainbow Stage height, 2. REDUCE stage depth.
You need to know the why dude. |

Nigel- remember Not everyone competes
and what may seem acceptable to others may not be acceptable to you!
Im playing with both locations, and i was wondering how many have dont the kickpanels- i know of the rainbow effect, but its something i may be able to accept! |

It has nothing to do with competition, so please dont make this about that.
On this forum, tweeter positioning is the least important/least discussed thing. There are, at most, 15-20 people who truly understand the importance of tweeter placement. It is second only to midrange placement. |

from my experience, once on axis, the closer one becomes way too localized
and one set of amplitude adjustment needs to be done, which can easily be avoided by just aiming them of axis
ive also heard tweeters aimed not entirely 'off axis' but at the opposite seats and that wasnt too bad either
once windshield rake and cluster guage is considered some playing around with it can also lead to better results |

| A pillars off axis, but not towards each other, more towards the rear view mirror, just below. |

So I did my a-pillars over the weekend...Now have some different tweeters than what was run in the kicks (same metal tho). I am really surprised at how smooth the sound is for metal tweets in a pillars.
The sound is much better, stage height much more stable and consistent and there is a kind of perceptive stage depth, but it doesnt sound real to me..it sounds as if there is not coherence between the midrange and tweeter for the depth imaging cues (but that is another issue)..whereas before the stage was just 2 dimensional with the kick mounted tweets. Also image focus has also improved a bit.
Tonally, i think the has been an improvement. There is better dynamics in the highs and even the midrange. Even the midbass sounds snappier now. |

both midrange driver and tweeter should be on the same axes.
on axis tweeter placement becomes too upfront and "in your face" making it too focal. |
