Always hear this term being used when referring to painting cars. Supposedly cheaper than your standard paint job.
What exactly they doing different?
Why does it cost less?
Does it make sense in the long run? |

| heard the term a few times, but never really knew what it meant.. i always assumed a 'flash over' was adding single coat of paint.. |

| Basically its painting over your car without rubbing down the entire car and prepping the body. Cheaper because obviously less labour etc is involved. |

All depends on the prior state of the vehicle.
If nothing was wrong then its just new paint. For a flash, minor imperfections and rust spots are covered with filler and this is where the issues arise. |

basically they don,t scrap down d car as would happen for a proper body job.
they tape up everything as is, where is and whatever lil dings the car have they slap some hot shot putty over it (since it relatively easier to rub off and they can skip primer.)
Sealer primer is generally not used when flashing too, as would happen with a full body job.
So they jus scoff your existing paint with ah 1200 sand paper and let go ah direct gloss paint on the car.
And there you have it yuh car jus get flash! |

| So in terms of a car with no damage body wise and just wanting to change the color, is this a viable option? |

ONLY IF the first and second colours are very close. Other wise - you have to do the full works. Cater 3 weeks for a change of colour with your average paint shop. You looking at:
scrap down
fix bad spots
rub down
prime (if necessary)
paint (1 or 2 coats)
clear (1 or 2 coats)
mount up
buff (maybe) |

flashing over can be done from 4 days to forever ....it all depends on the vehicle
1. scrap down -1 day
2. fixing bad spots (this is where the time and condition is considered)
3. rubdown prime and rub over -1 day
4.paint ,clear,mount up 1-1.5 days
5. buff and clean up -1 day
thise how it does happen in reputable garages but sometimes they like to lay off on time but you can get yh vehicle done is 5 days easy .....but it depends on yh vehicle current condition !! |

| usually when getting a time estimate from these guys just looking at the work, they tend to require more time than they told you. |

as the other guys said the painter just paints the outside of the car and fixes any minor imperfections this does not include the insides of the door jams trunk, hood etc
for a total paint over with a different colour your car go have to be scrapped down so all areas can be painted with the new colour |

Depends on the application of the paint and highly on the color and the state that the car is currently in. |
