|
|
Could I get some clarity on purchasing & registering a foreign used samurai?
What I know so far with approximate costs are
1. Buy foreign used (based on model)- $28500 - $45,000
2. Buy old register samurai - $8000 to $10,000
3. Swap cab of newer samurai to chassis of old samurai- $3500+
4. Licensing Authority pay for engine and or colour change- $???
My aprox. Total= 38,000 + 10k +3500 = $49,500
what I need clarity on are
A Does the model being swapped need to be identical? i.e. Sierra vs. ELK model
B how important is the series of the number plate with regards to model i.e. PAZ ... PBB?
C are the approximated prices ok?
D can anyone tell me of their experience doing anything similar -Time, Prices, anything I forgot and any advice |

you could get body/shells f. used cheaper if you look in the right places, i know a couple places have some cheap ones. i dunno bout the liscening office part, when i did my swap i replaced all the body pannels and body piece by piece instead of buyin an entire shell, but that depends on what it is you want. it is a bit time consuming, but if u want a good job u havta sacrifice some time. some ppl dont even bother to go to the liscene office, except for change of engine, but thats not adviseable.
A Does the model being swapped need to be identical? i.e. Sierra vs. ELK model
^i dont think it makes a diference, since the local jimnys (well old ones) were never recorded by their submodel eg. samurai jx etc. so it dont matter.
B how important is the series of the number plate with regards to model i.e. PAZ ... PBB?
imo it doesnt make a difference, cuz there are alot of f. used shells all over rolling as PAO etc. to most people a jimny is jimny lol.
in total it cost me about 25k to do a total conversion (including buyin vehicle etc) but i didnt buy a whle shell, keep that in mind.i also did alot of the work.that helped cut cost.
if you planning on spending abot over 33-36k, you as might as well as buy a new model jimny local used, cuz they alot more comfortable, fuel injected, powered etc.and can do all the same tings as it predecessor. thats my opinion eh, doe get vex lol.hope i was of some help. |

Around, foreign used shells should go for around $20-30,000 maximum. Don't buy any foreign used shell more than 30k. That would mean you are being ripped off.
In my opinion, get a good local used, and you good to go, well thats in my case. If I have to ever spend $20,000+ in fixing up my samurai, it would be to have a fully built and turbocharged 1600 engine with standalone engine management |

Around,
The new jimny well to start with it newer, most of the shells an dem is like 15+ yrs old, even thou in good condition, they wont last forever. The newer jimny rides alot more comfortable than the newest old model jimny/samurai. the new jimny hav all d powered features (well most of them).is really up to you. but a good local jimny (PBC-PBK) new model will go for the same price as doing an entire swap, between 30-37k. so is if u wanna spend the same cash on sumtin old or sumtin newer. if you worried bout ruggedness the new ones just as rugged, cuz its the same ladder frame chassis, leaf springs (some have coil springs), 4wd etc. it just has a more modern look. they cud be raised and ting too jus like the old ones. the new ones also hav better safety (airbags and crash bars in doors). |

yea man.it had a thread in here sometime ago about the comparison.the terios is basically a toyota, but the jimny 4x4 system and ladder chasis make it a good competitor. but i have driven an old model terios already, and it works great, good an gas as well, and could go in alot of places.it may not be as stable on the road as a jimny however but it has a bit more room. |
