trying to find out something.
is there a way to get an electrical signal for specific gear positions in a manual vehicle?
i know there is the reverse signal wire for the gearbox, but is it possible to get a signal for the other gears?
if it is possible, whats the procedure?

it's possible, but would require you wiring indiviual circuits, for each gear position. I thought about doing it, but wasnt bored enough to complete.

pm zodiaque, he could tell you what you need to start.

i figure the magnetic circuit mite be better. the challenge is when the gear positions so close. hmm. so there's no other way to do this from the engine/gearbox side?

it doesn't matter where the shifter is mounted really

if a finisher plate is made with grooves for each gear lever position (like a "double H" groove pattern is cut out of the finisher plate like in some euro 5spd shifters), and some microswitches are placed at the tops of these positions with each switch triggering a single LED, a simple harness can be made to connect the switching circuit to a gear position indicator on the dash

it will be permanently mounted on the centre consol at the shifter position and u have the option of either painting it really nice to compliment the interior or covering it up with a shifter boot

if you desire to go even more "hi-tech", you can use the switched inputs to trigger a display on a single 7-LED digital counter, so that it runs the gears 0(N)-1-2-3-4-5-R...
that way u have an actual numerical representation of the gear position and u only need to find space for one small digital display module instead of for 6 individual LEDs or modifying your instrument cluster wiring Idea

here is my idea
get some switches like these
simply push button switches when pushed in will close the circuit
build an adapter plate and put it around the shifter to that it indicates each position
get something like this
Click for full-size.

and wire each switch to an led
1 would light the first led 2 would light the first 2 and so on and r would light the whole strip
it really should not be hard the hardest part may be making the adapter plate

^^^ that would be a bit bulky to install...and it'd look real Knight Rider-ish Laughing

mine would be the same way with the miniswiches and the finisher plate, except that the output would either be used to drive a single LED per gear mounted in the instrument cluster
it's similar to Automatic transmissions with the "L-1-D-N-R-P"
if an A/T to M/T conversion was done, that would make things much easier...all u hafta do is run the wires to the shifter and modify the instrument cluster to show numbers instead of "L" and "D" et al

OR

the outputs can be used to drive a single 7-segment digital display that gives the actual number of the gear...the smaller one to this nuh

the electronics can be mounted under the dash somewhere and the display can be assembled onto either the factory instrumnt cluster or maybe a 2 1/16" circular plexi so that it can be mounted in a gauge pod on the A-pillar or something

instead of switches you could use these instead, they are small enough and can be adjusted to only detect the shift lever.
