a "driver" in terms of musical equipment is a speaker

eg.
a bass driver is a sub-woofer
a mid-bass driver is a woofer
a mid-range driver is a squawker

A capacitor's storage potential, or capacitance, is measured in units called farads. A 1-farad capacitor can store one coulomb (coo-lomb) of charge at 1 volt. A coulomb is 6.25e18 (6.25 * 10^18, or 6.25 billion billion) electrons. One amp represents a rate of electron flow of 1 coulomb of electrons per second, so a 1-farad capacitor can hold 1 amp-second of electrons at 1 volt.

A 1-farad capacitor would typically be pretty big. It might be as big as a can of tuna or a 1-liter soda bottle, depending on the voltage it can handle. For this reason, capacitors are typically measured in microfarads (millionths of a farad).

^^^ in playing loud music, when loud bass notes hit, the car's battery cannot discharge at a rate fast enough to keep up with the current draw from the power amplifiers...however capacitors can quickly store charge and can discharge at a much faster rate, so your music system doesn't suffer from starvation and your lights etc don't dip as much (or not at all if your current supply is adequate)

not quite....because mankind as yet to create a speaker that plays all frequencies in the audio spectrum with precise clarity, we have no other choice but to have separate speakers for the different ranges; sub-woofers for those earth-shaking lows, woofers for our mid-bass and punchiness, mid-range drivers for well, midrange, and tweeters for brightness

a crossover separates, the audio signal into these ranges (some thresholds can be set by the user) and then the sound can be manipulated either directly to a driver or through an amplifier network, depending on the application and the type of crossover unit

Good basic info for the noobs - but - this thread probably needs to be moved.

Check this link for additional info on crossover, frequency spectrum, etc.:

aside from what hook said, the term 'drivers' is often used when referring to compression drivers.

compression drivers are basically high frequency speakers

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compression_driver

they look like this

the compression driver is usually coupled to a horn like this

they are mostly for home / DJ use but they are making their way into the car audio world..
