When I had to change the a/c compressor in the 1996 Accent that I used to drive, my options were:
1) Go with a new universal compressor which needed brackets to be fabricated to accomodate this type of compressor. There was some a/c place in Barataria where I got the price from. I think everything was coming up to around $5k.
2) Go with a re-manufactured compressor. This was sourced at Ryanair in Dinsley. The price for everything was cheaper than the new universal compressor.
I went with the re-manufactured compressor (given the depreciated value of the car) and the 2 years that I ran it in the car before the car was sold, it never gave any problems.
My TT$0.02. |

Ryanair - 640-5828. Ask for Mohan.
That was over 2 years ago, I think everything (parts and labour) came up to just over $4k (re-man. compressor, re-gassing (R12 gas is expensive), new drier, new a/c belt).
Depending on how long you plan to keep the car, I guess a cheaper option may be looking for a foreign used one, or one off of a locally crashed car. The problem with that is you really don't know what you are getting and, if you do get a warranty, it will likely be crap and useless. |

I believe the R12 is the very hard to find and expensive refrigerant because of the environmental concerns with it. The R134a is the more eco-friendly one that is being used in today's cars. |
