Hi folks,
This is a "bench racing" question. What solodex class would this combination fall into?
A Vauxhall Viva HC...
with a stock 2000cc Pinto (Ford Cortina engine)?

Really? So if I just add 400cc to my engine, I will catapult from GS to ESP...
A stock 2.0 Pinto generates 82hp and my car weighs 1999lbs – and that is with the lighter 1600cc Kent, not to mention the gearbox is lighter as well. The “on-line dyno” at RPM.com put a ¼ mile time of a car weighing 2000lbs and pushing 80hp at the wheels at 17 seconds. ES? What you think?
It would be fun to be considered competitive at ESP in a car costing less than $5000!!! Battling it out with Audi A4s, Primeras, turbocharged Mazdas and Toyotas, 1993 Supras...

| well besides the power to weight ratio the age and suspension design also have to be factored. this would put you in es. |

age? pardon my ignorance, but i've never seen age as a factor in the rules
also, would this rule not affect newer cars with "newer" suspension designs and types? |

No Moti, not fed up - far from it! GS is the class with the best ratio of little spending:plenty fun! I am building another GS car and would prefer to use the Kent 1600cc in it. This leaves the Vauxhall open for an upgrade. So I'm not leaving GS. It's just that a Pinto in the Viva is a tickle I would love to scratch!
If you want a clue about class placing in dex, check the CARS website. The info and examples of cars placed has always been most useful. ( Yes Salty, ES was the sentence passed by some of my old gang (the Old Car Posse) when they viewed the CARS listing.)
Reixmann, I think when Salty said "age", he was not refering to a rubric or part of the rules, but the idea that old engine technology is not as efficient as more modern counterparts. (No MG, that's not MY opinion, that's just what people say... put down the stone, nah...)
Moti, that is why I specified "stock" in my query. The 2L Pinto was designed before many of the people reading this were born, but this mill has heaps of potential - however that is another story. |

Oh really? Interesting.... | gt4tfied, did you read my last post re "age"? Salty is refering to a car built in 1970 and powered by an engine designed in 1970 (one of the first belt-driven OHC engines). The fact that this combo (82 hp at the flywheel, let's not discuss power loss thanks to drivetrain) is considered competitive above the GS class among much more modern cars is a podium in itself!! |

well you may not see in the rules as the age of the car, you might see it based on the design of the suspension and the power to weight ratio.
If you have a car designed in the 1970's that weighs 3000lbs and you have a car from 2009 that weighs the same amount and they have the same power the car from 2009 should be higher classed. This is because of design improvements in those 39 years. we are classing cars here and lets be fair how can standard cortina engine in a viva chassis compete with a newer car? now if you modify the engine and get 140bhp and redesign the suspension then we have a case but not as per the request. |

Nope, sorry I can't read. My 5yr old chile does have to read to me what allyuh write.
On another note though, not because a design is dated does it mean that it is out-of-date. |

Zodi, none of my "old car" pardners will be able to run until middle of next year, and you busy taking your toy apart to see what makes that funny sound... does GS really exist? If a Vauxhall falls in the forest by itself, does it make a sound? (strains of 'Only the lonely' in the background...)
"now if you modify the engine and get 140bhp and redesign the suspension..." SSH! oh gorm... (Moti, re 2L Pinto, a not-too-robust cam and headers = 135bhp...)
"On another note though, not because a design is dated does it mean that it is out-of-date. " Preach it, gt4tified, preach! holy words! A brother in the faith! That is exactly what my gang of heathens has been saying all these years. But then, I implied as such in my third post above...
Oh, I forgot... "Nope, sorry I can't read."
Ahh well... if you want, my 9 year old daughter and my 11 year old son can both read quite well. They can give you lessons, if you like... |

Now poor ol' Zodi mus' be wrap up inside he gutted Lancer weeping his eyes out
(Pink Floyd "Is there anybody out there?" playing...) |

I wish.
No plans to go manual anytime soon.
Car undergoing some repairs right now but should be back on the road by next week.
Hope to be at the next event, whenever that is. |
