Members,

I own a pajero 3500cc 24 valve V6 and I am reading of different recommendations from different sources as to oil use. I presently use 10w-30. Many people are suggesting 20w-50. What do you recommend?

if the 10w-30 is not burning off then no porbs with its use
if it does then u can increase viscosity to 15w-40/15w-50 and then maybe to 20w-50
see how it goes

Some have said 10w-30 is a very light oil, however when we removed the head of the engine today I saw these small holes the oil has to pass through, plus those on the lifters. I think 20w-50 would not make it, though under pressure. Just my 2 cents.

I would stick to the 10W 30

Mobil 1 or Shell

that is a V6 engine - plenty power

you want plenty lube as well

Seems I got a new situation on hand. I now have a bearing knock after changing the timing belt and tensioner. Any suggestions as to what may have caused it.

I think its a bearing knock as it took just under a day to develop, after the timing belt and tensioner was replaced. The vehicle has not been moved as yet.

After the engine was fired up the hydraulic tappets were very noisy, due to the lack of oil circulation. We had to remove all 24 lifters and clean them up well. Three of them were actually stuck. So we left the vehicle to idle until the noise of the tappets disappeared. It was only when we revved up the engine after a prolonged idling period that this grating noise is coming from the bowels of the engine. I am not having a good day upon realising what has just happened. I now have to spend over $4000TT to get main bearings and the cankshaft to be up and running again.....and talk about stripping the engine, and mounting it up.................. again.

The main bearing in St.Lucia costs $1024 EC while the crankshaft cost $700. Labour will cost.........( help me Lord).

I am getting the noise from the back of the engine, not the front where the tensioner and timing belt was replaced. The mechanic says its the low quality oil that was bought that caused the engine knock. Before it was serviced I used 10w-30 fully synthetic oil in my engine, and had it there for nine months. The vehicle is a 1996 model pajero. I am the third owner of this vehicle.

The mechanic is probably working on my engine right now. I really wanna know if the crankshaft is damaged. I already know some serious dough has to be spent. I am hoping for the best, though.

Well, I saw the crakshaft and bearing today and it is damaged. I may have to get it polished, although another mechanic warned me against doing so. It seems I may have to get one from Trinidad after all during this week. The options are to polish the crankshaft with the six journals, and here in st.Lucia it may cost me up to $700 EC per journal, making the cost of redoing the crankshaft over $4200 EC dollars. The downside to this is that this is not guaranteed to work perfectly, based on the amunt of work to be done. Labor to get the engine up and running has not been factored in as yet.

Anyone has a good 6G74 crankshaft to spare? I am paying for the part plus the shipping expenses.

Seems I may just have to settle for a complete used lower engine to replace my damaged one. I know of only one on the island presently that the owner wants to part with. Seems I may have to get a loan for this one.....lol.--All the other guys have their jeeps up and running.
