Well recently I checked and 18" rims can fit on my car. Someone told me that 18" rims on a Rover 200 strains the suspension...

Is that true?

The rims fit comfortably, and cleared when I locked the steering both ways.

Is there any other thing that I need to consider when buying these bigger rims?

(I ran a search but I'm honestly not going to read through over 600 posts)

It's a Rover 200, automatic.

Unsprung weight is your main concern.

Take a read of the link below on the subject.

Up sizing wheels?

That was an excellent read Rory, thank you.

But what about if I'm just a very careful driver? Therefore, power and braking distance is not an immediate concern, would it still not be advised?

If I use it, are there things I should take note of?

Beasically what I want to know is, would I be severely damaging or straining anything? Because I really like how they look...

Depending on the consequences, I am will to make the sacrifice.

Bigger rims put unnecessary strain on the car, regardless of 'how careful' a driver you are. ESPECIALLY a small car as a rover 200..in addition to that, you'll experience poor fuel economy. I'd say 16's for the most.

i dont see nun in the 18s on ur car once u gettin proper clearance, the biggest culprit is the weight of them though, thats where the suspension gettin more jammin than usual, see if u can get some lighter 18s that can atleast weigh as light as some regular 16s but remember you also will be running lower profile tyres, and u wont wanna be dropping down in a serious pot hole wit it, something to consider

weight is an issue for your suspension, wheel bearings, your tranny, steering ends and bushings. plus with the extremely low profile you will hafta run (i'm thinking 35 series) the rims themselves could be damaged in normal day-to-day driving (cos Trini road not easy). you will not be able to drive to or park any and everywhere (trust me...i am speaking from experience).

if you wanna do it, is your choice....just letting you know your limitations

Don't know what engine your Rover 200 has but even the stock K16, 16-valve, turbo 1800
only has 150-190 hp. A 1600 Rover 200 is straining to put out 111 hp (82 kW.)

Why??? The 18" rim is almost the same size as your 14" rim PLUS tyre.
When you add a tyre to the 18" acceleration will be so SLOW (especially with the automatic)
that you'll take them off VERY soon.

IMHO going from a 14" to a 16" rim with a low profile radial might be a better idea.

Is there anything that can be modified in order for the car to be able to handle the 18s?

What you need is more low-end torque and correct gearing IMHO.
I still don't know what engine you car has... and I don't know what is available
for the Rover 200. PM BANzai.

18's FTW!!!!!

if u like it buy it.
u aint need now quick acceleration once u aint planning to race.
bushings and stuff will destroy eventually anyhow ?
bigger rims may encourage u to drive slower -thus safer
they look decent

once u prepare to maintain i dont see the problem
