|
hi guys, ive read that ty extractors are no better than standard headers.
So how do i know what a ty style extractors look like? as i have no idea!
I was wondering if it refers to the 'merging' of two pipes. ie. a 't' part is where one pipe joins another through pipe without a proper collector... |

i'm wondering if by TY you mean 4-2-1 extractors
, as compared to 4-1

'merging' of two pipes. ie. a 't' part is where one pipe joins another through pipe without a proper collector, kinda like this header.

i'm mostly clueless.
but i thought normally the advantage of extractors where having the distance from block to merge point more or less the same length, and being the right length for the exhaust pulse.
id have thought your pic is that of a standard header. |

When I was researching extractors for my car ( I had to consider building one cuz the clearance of an aftermarket one wouldn't have fit) I came across that.
If the pipes not the same length you would actually lose power of somin like that. I didn't come across the terms ty though. I came arcoss the 4-2-1, i believe the 4-2-1 is for more high end torque and 4-1 is for low end ....could be wrong cuz i doh really recall what i read...t'was a while now. |

ty is not short for tri-y? meaning 3 y's or 2-1 merges ie 4-2-1
that is of course for any 4 in line cylinders.
tri-y is a more forgiving design as opposed to 4-1 that needs to match intake, cams, headwork, compression and intended power band more accurately. |

thought it was the other way around.
4-2-1 gave you more resistance (backpressure i think is the term) which was key to getting low end torque. (normally used for N/A cars).
and 4-1 was for better flow at high rpm, and was also preferred for turbo spooling. |

Yup, it's a "Tri-Y" header." AFAIK it was originally designed for V8s by the yanks. Also used in 4-cylinder (unequal length) "street" and more expensive, bigger bore, (equal length) "club rally" engines.
A "Tri-Y" is a less expensive alternative to "4-into-1" (equal length) headers used at higher levels of competition.
