Hey guys, I have a silvertop engine with the usual boltons.
I noticed that the ST has a AFM whereas the BT is MAP (I think).
Because the 4 ITBs of the ST all feed thru the opening of the AFM, isnt that an automatic restriction?
I guess what I am asking is what is the advantages of going MAP on a ST...
any ideas?
In the explanations can u specify a horsepower range....because I would assume at the stock level there would be no advantage since Toyota most probably would have done it MAP-style.
I have no experience with modding toyota engines...actually piston engines in general so any help would be appreciated.

MAP Sensor? all i no online on the turbo motors they allow you to reach a certain boost level, it measure amount of air going into the intake manifold.....if it reaches a certain amount it brings a fuel and boost cut i think....

Maf as far as i know Air flows past a heated wire that’s part of a circuit that measures electrical current. Current flowing through the wire heats it to a temperature that is always held above the inlet air temperature by a fixed amount. Air flowing across the wire draws away some of the heat, so an increase in current flow is required to maintain its fixed temperature. The amount of current needed to heat the wire is proportional to the mass of air flowing across the wire. The mass-air meter also includes a temperature sensor that provides a correction for intake air temperature so the output signal is not affected by it. The MAF sensor’s circuitry converts the current reading into a voltage signal for the computer, which in turn equates the voltage value to mass flow.

Toyota uses AFM on there engines like the silver top. The AFM is simply a sprung flap that swings back more and more as the engine sucks more air, the problem is it cant measure the density of the air like MAF and MAP it just gives fuel to suit how far back the flap goes. e.g if u put on a intake on a 4age silver top and a 4age black top, the black top once the ecu is reset will make more power than the silvertop because it can actually calculate and increase in the flow. Maf is even cooler cus when the intake is on the voltage will change and it will tell the ecu to send some more gas and u will not have to reset sheit. Maf is on like lancers and swift GTI's MAP is on most Toyotas accept the silver top and the bigport 4agze. AFM ive seen only on the Silvertop and the bigport 4agze.

So should u change to MAP...NAH. Why waste money the silver eh that different in BHP than the black and it is stronger internally Very Happy so doh study it, spend your money cleaning up the head and doing a multi angle valve job then stick some cams in deh and make some power. Laughing

I'll keep those mods in mind.
I was thinking where is the best place to have my air filter....it is short ram style but I know that is not the most effective location.
Any ideas?I have a PAY ae101 local corolla btw.
ALso, what size exhaust would u recommend for a stock ST?
I heard 2 or 2.25?
What allyuh think?

I think 2.25 is about right for a silvertop 4a-ge. My previous car.....(an ae101)....has a silver top and 2.25 piping.
