Question - Are glow plugs an easy swap out?
How long do they last on average, or have you swapped out yours yet? Any details on the procedure? Just curious as I've hit the 50000km mark recently, if I should be looking for anything in particular. |

Fellas!
I know I been MIA but I back in work again
Talk bout pressah!
First - hearing funny screeching sound from engine.
Thought it was a/c pulley, then maybe alternator impellar or bearings, A guy tell me "water pump". Finally took it by the mechanic to see what it could be.
Checked turbo, no problems. Turns out the exhaust manifold gasket was a lil damged. (Metal gasket? Damaged? Really?)
Took it off, sourced a new one - from Southern Sales, mind you. NO one else in north trinidad has it.
Took off exhaust manifold to machine as well. Stud broke - had to tief one from an ole engine! And you KNOW how many places does be open the week before christmas. Not to mention the TRAFFIC!
So she all sorted out. Collected it on the Christmas Friday, drove it home fine.
By weekend my father telling me how the thing can't go into gear and it can only start in gear! Well I ain't drive it or examine it yet, cause I have some other business to sort out, but geez!
Mechanic not coming back out till next year, so truck park up.
Gonna have to get that truck blessed when I get it back on the road |

Ain't broke, don't fix.
Glow plugs last a fairly long while. Original set lasted 120K km or so. You may inspect them. and chose to change them if you want. I think the Rangers / Mazdas use NGK. Roughly about $75 - $90 for one.
To remove, you have to remove the rail which secures the glow plugs and carries the electrical. You'll have to also remove the idle / temp sensor module (located closer to the firewall, above the glow plugs) cause it obstructs your access to the bolts of the rail.
Can't remember what else you need to do. It's not that difficult. Will take a competent mechanic about half hour to remove and inspect.
A good indicator of worn glow plugs are rough cold start and rough idle at cold start. Also unusual glow plug warm up times can be an indication of worn plugs.
But all in all, I think you gtg at 50K km. Don't worry bout them until about 75 - 100 K km |

I did 187 000km in the my 4x2 hilux and never touched them.
Agreed... if it ain't broke, don't fix it. As we all know diesel engines are pretty expensive when it comes to repairs.
It'll be good to link up with the Diesel boys.....let's continue to share our learnings and respect one another. |

half of that driving will be cruising and that majority of the rest is 2nd-3rd gear driving.

I wouldn't mind making a run from Price Plaza to Toco and back instead.
That way I can convince the embassy to go with me
Road is nice and quiet up there too, and there are numerous beach stop offs. Walk with your fishing rods if you into that etc.
Just a suggestion. |
