i did my third oil change yest. changed oil and oil filter as well as the airfilter. i bought a fuel filter as well but when i open the box they say change every 40,000km so oh well i no where near that. i'm sticing to the castrol turbomax gaurdian 3 and change my oil every 5000km as well as maintain all original parts.
chose to stick to the 5000km oil chnage becasue i use my vehicle all day everyday and i feel alot safer with it, knowing that de badjon is well maintained. |

Sniper... Could you let us know how much half tank is in terms of litres. It sounds impressive. We've recently been calculating mileage in terms of km/l. Having the a/c off helps but it shouldn't reduce power output significantly on a good working engine.
So here's my record on mileage
1) 29th april 565km took $40 diesel slightly under quarter tank
2) 5th may 480km took $38 almost quarter
3) 9th may 345 took $27 half tank
4) 13th may 486km $37 almost quarter tank. |

Patchie....is this your first diesel? When you change diesel oil, after two days, it gets black again.
IMHO 5000km is good man. In my previous hilux (2L engine) I ran oil to 6000km, did 187 000km and never had a problem.
Now with the SR5 I'm running fully syntec (mobile delvac1) to 7500km with no problems either.
What's your mileage? Would you want to give full syntec oil a try? After 5000km it'll look the same but syntec has lots more detergent so you can run it up a bit more. Another option to try a slighty heavier body oil. |

Sniper.. those figure looks excellent man... I take it this a non turbo.
You're averaging 20 km/l where as I'm averaging around 8.5 km/l, then again I driving a 3.0 turbo 4x4. |

For an original fuel filter 40K km is good... If you have an aftermarket filter - Sakura, etc, then the change interval is dramatically less. Well this is what I have observed. Other people's experience could prove different |

Anil.... I've never had to service diesel injectors... my mechanic told me that they don't need servicing as much as those in a gas engine....what need servicing after a significant amount of mileage (150 000 - 200 000km) is the fuel pump. I've never done it but I'm assuming the injectors would be serviced when servicing the pump.
I'm not sure if the other guys may have different thoughts on this. |

180,000 km - never touched the injectors (or fuel pump - knock on wood...)
If it ain't broke... you know the rest.

It's supposed to be a very good oil. Remember it's a 15W40. I'll change back to the 25W50 cause my engine is getting up in age. |

But in gearing down will that damage the belts? the timming belt that is. Cus when i gear down the car jerks back and sounds like some thing is wrong...or is that normal? |

| ^^ hmm sounds like you need some experience driving a manual. its normal but you need to have ur foot on the gas or else it will jerk back. you may need someone to show you. basically an automatic does the same thing it gears down and applies the gas whenever you mash down. in a manual you control everything manually. |

Sniper with regards to gearing down and gearing up refer to your manual for max speeds for the various gears. If you're doing 70km/h and you gear down from 3 to 2nd and the max speed for 2nd gear is 60 km/h, the vehicle will jerk, the rpm will run up and in extreme cases you run the risk of locking up the 'drive' wheels.
If you don't have a manual, then you need to feel out the gears and at what speed they work best.
As Kid says it comes with experience... it took me a while before I got the gearing right....because the gearbox and ratios was different to my previous 4x2 lux. I listen to my engine when I'm gearing up or down, and usually glimpse at my RPMs.
Practise gearing up and down at various speeds for the different gears. But please note that your gear box is use to control the gears and not used for extreme slowing down. Brakes pad are cheaper than a gearbox and clutch parts. |

You also have to remember driving too slow for a particular gear will put more pressure on the engine as well. 30-40 Km/h should be in the 2nd gear range for most vehicles.

It pretty much the same principle but on the slow side.
Picture trying to start riding a 10speed bi-cycle in 10th gear.... Your legs will be paining for weeks.
Feel out the gears...look at the RPMS.... and listen to the engine. |
