What's the difference with cetane and octane. What does what?

Cetane is for use with a diesel engine while octane is used for gasoline engines.

Octane is an alkane with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)6CH3.
Octane ratings are ratings used to represent the anti-knock performance of petroleum-based fuels (octane is less likely to prematurely combust under pressure than heptane), It is an important constituent of gasoline.

Hexadecane (also called cetane) is an alkane hydrocarbon with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)14CH3. Cetane is often used as a short-hand for cetane number, a measure of the combustibility of diesel fuel. Cetane ignites very easily under compression; for this reason, it is assigned a cetane number of 100, and serves as a reference for other fuel mixtures.

Cetane rating of diesel is not equivalent to gasoline's octane rating. This is because gasoline's desirable property is to resist autoignition to prevent engine knocking whereas diesel's desirable property is to autoignite.

Thanks for that info...

This is one of the reasons I stay away from fuel additives which state: "Safe for both gasoline and diesel engines"

Freak... Here's the results from the 3 ounces of acetone added into the diesel.

NB: my driving conditions weren't the same since I drove extremely hard and sat in lots of traffic.

I've gone from 8.33km/l to ......to 8.5 km/l. The van felt more powerful.

I may have to test again under my normal driving conditions. Will keep you posted.

Thanks big brodda sweeks Exclamation I'll remember dat...

Remember that be reagant grade eh Exclamation Which is about $350 or so per gallon...So your're working out to just about $3-4.00 of acetone, per fill up.

There is also industrial grade - the price of which, I dont want to know... Laughing Laughing

Sup fellas....

Freak... I'm not sure what you're telling me about the difference between the reagent and industrial acetone.

Are you saying the industrial grade is more potent? Better quality?? Tell me more please.

Wagon_r... thanks for the update.

Sniper... Could you let us know how much half tank is in terms of litres. It sounds impressive. We've recently been calculating mileage in terms of km/l. Having the a/c off helps but it shouldn't reduce power output significantly on a good working engine.

Freak... when do you get back to Trini? Like you having a good ole time there in Tobago.... looking for mud....

According to my one of my suppliers, industrial grade acetone is the purest, highest grade that there is. Extremely concentrated. Re-agent grade is below that but still very pure because of its intended use.

Regular acetone, i.e. those found in nail polish remover, paint thinners, etc etc are not very potent. The acetone itself is a lower grade.

Hence, using regular acetone wont yield any significant results because of the concentration of the acetone.

Makes sense now?

Freak... thanks for the explanation. I'm travelling next week, so when I get back I'll increase the amount of acetone to diesel.

Mighty...... congrats to you as well. That exam was mind boggling. Now you should have some time to start reading up on common rail technology and the high pressure fuel system if you haven't done so already... and that you can now run your oil changes to 10 000km instead of 5000km using full syntec.
