Finally I officially a member of the 4x4 Diesel Boys... (once allyuh will have me). Collected the Hilux on Saturday and loving it.
How difficult is it to install a turbo timer? I want to install a good one, spend now...save later. Any recommendations on some good turbo timers I could use? |

Congrats and Welcome....Is this your first diesel?
If so, there's lots to catch up on. We're on page 54 now.
Installing a turbo timer isn't very difficult. Two good brands that comes to mind is Blitz and Hks. I'm not sure what your location is but I had mines installed by Jerry's in St. Augustine 663-2231.
(BTW I've also see some alarms that has an inbuilt turbo timer.) |

Thanks sweeks. First diesel...and first turbo as well.
Sweeks, remember the sports bar i was planning to sell.... i ended up getting one like the pics i had sent... not the one they showed me. So, sorry about that... I'm not going to sell it again. Sorry again
I'm have to keep reminding myself to let it idle for a few mins before I turn it off. The turbo timer should help with that.... I'm also planning to take out the alarm toyota installed and have the multilock system installed.
Other plans include a spray on bed liner and the spray on rust proofing at ziebart. |

323 Wagon Dude.... no problem with the Roll bar. I'll get what I'm looking for one day.
What kind of alarm did you get with the Hilux? The multilock is good but I'd suggest you give carsearch consideration.
With regards to letting the turbo cool down, refer to the owners manual and it'll let you know how long to let it run before switching off. With the 1kz-te, for speeds up to 80 km/h, the recommended cool down time is 20 secs. If you're running an intercooler and a 1KD-FTV or 2KD-FTV, it should be similar.
Wagon_R ... you need to see the SR5 now. No where close to being "sweeky clean". Went to Maracas yesterday in all that bad weather. There was lots of fog and rain. Almost scary but she did well. Will clean up her interior sometime this week. Don't like the idea of her being a 'dirty' girl.

however, the manual recommends that you reverse a few feet after changing from 4wd to 2wd to ensure disengagment.
.....read your manual saied, alot of the questions are answered in there. |
My wheels... disengage... automatically...
The clank is the wheels disengaging, LSD loading etc, etc... all normal sounds....
wrt the gear oil, diff oils, I used Belray before - great stuff... If you can find it, use it. most gearboxes use 90 body oil and the diffs use 140 body but REFER to manual
Last time I checked, couldn't get the Belray so I used Castrol. Same SAE ratings. |

We have an alarm system on one of the trucks from Oscar Francois - I think is a Multilock, that has a turbo timer, auto starter, etc built into it. Very cool.
Personally I wouldn't invest in a turbo timer. I just let it cool down a lil bit - 30 secs etc. And I usually slow down when I am close to my destination.

I was reading thru the owners manual and there is this section that has the max speed per gear you drive at.... The H2 and H4 were listed as the same. Does that mean I could drive in H4 and have an all wheel drive?
Manufacturer recommends the hilux be driven at least 16km in 4wd mode. I see offroading in my future....lol |

323_Wagon_Dude ...Remember a lot of wear and tear occurs when you're in 4wd drive (esp L4). I usually turn on the 4wd on the highway twice per month or when it's raining (just to lubricate the moving parts) or when I venture into mud which isn't very regular.
I may have the recommended service schedule for the 1KD-FTV which is very similar to the 2KD-FTV. Let me know if you need a copy. |

^^ I cyar believe he saying it so proud... with no shame eh wagon
H4 is NOT for dry pavement eh 323_wagon_dude... Like sweeks said... just give it a lil run in for a few minutes every weekend or so. Your diesel consumption will increase dramatically as well. |
