Brought to you by the Deisel Boys of Trinituner
My first diesel engine ( Mitsubishi L200 2.5 turbo diesel )
Need some advice on regular maintenance procedure, How is this different from Gasoline engines ?
Eg. what interval is recommended for oil,& filter changes? ( Air filter included) How often should injectors be cleaned etc ?
Thanks |

maintenance on these engines are depenent on your driving condtions, but usually:
every 5000Kms is good for an oil change, if you have wear at your turbo shaft, change oil every 3000Kms
also , doh expect the see the oil in your dipstick remaining clear at all.. this is typical of diesel engines
I recommend the castrol Viscus max. good results so far.
if youre in an excessively dusty atmosphere (jobsites etc) your filter should be checked every 3000kms
there's a tap off at the bottom of your fuel filter for the water separator, this should be drained monthly ( let the water run out till u see fuel coming out )
the fuel filter itself should ideally be changed with oil filter , but if no particles are observed when the water is drained, keeep it till you see dregs coming out.
glow plugs should be removed & checked if you get difficulty in starting on mornings
Remember diesel engines have much more compression than gas engines so diesel oil takes a lot more stress.. so if you notice burning off, change the oil at a shorter interval.
These mitsus have a history of breaking rocker arms so if you notice something like a tappet knock , please have it checked & make sure the mech doesnt over tighten it ..
i think thats about it for now .. or all i can remember rght now.
post if u have more questions |

Diesels work great once they are serviced properly.
Do NOT compromise on this!
Is it a brand new vehicle RNR66? If not check/change diff oil, tranny oil, etc. in addition to the engine internals.
Also, ensure that your cooling system is working like CLOCKWORK! You'll thank me for it later If you have doubts, enquire about a 3 core radiator... |

| make sure and change ur timing belt on time.. (think is 100000 km) make sure this leads to breakin the rockers ( depends on which type (hard to get) sumtimes it maybe be better to buy a whole engine.. |

| it's basically the same effect it has on a gas engine... it helps the seals in the turbo to last longer... ( cools down the oil temp.) |

....seeing a lot of frontier drivers using them now and i guess it would spread across the board soon.
i heard the nissans need it though.....turbos tend to go asa it did in rover's case. |

I've noticed on the L200 a warning light on the dash connected to the base of the fuel filter which lets you know when the filter requires draining... |

| I belive this warning light on the dash is on most modern diesel cars. My Mazda B2500 has it also. Come on when i put the key in for a second. Manual says if it stays on then the filiter needs to be drained. |

| If you get your fuel from a good station then you shouldn't have too many problems with the water in the fuel filter. I have never had a problem with the water trap in 6 years of using the Mazda |

Some more diesel engine info:
"Gasoline engines can be designed so that even if the timing belt breaks, the valves will not contact the pistons, regardless of what position the camshaft stops in (a so-called non-interference engine). Not all gasoline engines are non-interference ... but they can be. This is impossible with a diesel engine because of the high compression ratio, and the small space between the piston and head in order to achieve that compression ratio. All 4-stroke diesel engines are therefore interference designs."
