The App Store has reached an amazing one billion downloads with both iTunes and Apple.com featuring celebration pages as predicted earlier.
According to TUAW the billionth download took place around 4:52 EST.

Once believed to have blown its first chance at the iPhone, Verizon is now claimed to be in discussions with Apple for its own version of the iPhone in 2010.
Pointing only to anonymous people familiar with the negotiations as its sources, USA Today explains that Verizon reportedly entered serious talks before Steve Jobs’ hiatus and has been continuing those talks even with Jobs temporarily sidelined for medical reasons.
Other than a 2010 target release window, little else is divulged by the apparent insiders.
Although not explicitly stated, the newspaper infers that the phone would be a CDMA device compatible with Verizon’s existing network and therefore using EVDO for its 3G Internet access. Such a move would give the phone broad coverage but directly contradicts Apple COO Tim Cook’s own dismissal of CDMA last week: when discussing iPhone expansion plans, the executive justified the absence of a CDMA model by arguing that a single, GSM phone model is easier to produce than building a separate version for a relatively small batch of customers. Cook also sharply criticized CDMA by asserting that ithas no future, as most CDMA carriers plan to phase out the calling technology in favor of the same 4G standard that will be used on GSM networks.
More likely is a direct leap to a 4G. Verizon chief executive Ivan Seidenberg recently explained that a deal is more likely for a phone with the advanced networking technology as it would let Apple continue making one phone but still service North American carriers that are for now off limits. Verizon plans to officially launch its commercial 4G network in early 2010 and would therefore have at least some of its network ready for an iPhone by the time AT&T’s exclusivity term ends, which is likely for the same year.
However determined Verizon may be to land an iPhone of its own, AT&T may topple those ambitions through its own discussions. Separate rumors have the incumbent iPhone carrier pushing Apple to extend its US exclusivity until 2011 — enough to stall any Verizon deal until AT&T’s own 4G network is ready.
Any successful deal, no matter the network type, would likely be a serious blow to AT&T, which credited much of its ability to weather the ongoing economic crisis to iPhone sales and the resulting spike in data revenue. Aside from reducing incentives to launch massive, special upgrades to the network, a Verizon model would let those dissatisfied with AT&T’ s 3G coverage or its customer service defect to Verizon without giving up Apple’s handset.

on a side note
Apple has announced the lucky winner of the contest:
| Quote: | | “The one billionth app, Bump created by Bump Technologies, was downloaded by Connor Mulcahey, age 13, of Weston, CT. As the grand prize winner of Apple’s one billion app countdown contest, Connor will receive a $10,000 iTunes gift card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule and a MacBook Pro.” |

Hey I need a little advice here. Hope I am not on the wrong thread.
Got a locked (AT&T) iPhone recently. I upgraded the firkmeware to version 2.1 using the QuickPwn 2.2 tool. The phone was successfully unlocked and activated. However the problem I am having is that the GSM signal is very low and regularly drops off the bmobile network.
What should I do to fix that problem? Everything else works fine.
It is an iPhone 2G 8GB. |

Okay, I need some help.
Do you know if I could broadcast my iPhone screen into Keynote, similar to what the engineers and Steve Jobs do when they present?
I know there's an emulator and then there's the SDK, which is not the same. If you look at any of the major iPhone presentations, there's an attached cable and it's evident that the users are controlling the iPhone.
I just wrote my first App and need to present it in it's true environment rather than the SDK simulator.
By the way, the new OS is way cool! |

Microsoft Corp. plans to take aim at Apple's iPhone with its own version of touch-screen handset that could launch on Verizon's network sometime early in 2010, according to a report published just minutes ago by the Wall Street Journal.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the financial publication said the two companies are currently discussing possible terms of the deal. It adds that Microsoft has been working on its own touch-screen smartphone hardware under the code-name "Pink."
The project would reportedly leverage and then extend upon Microsoft's existing Windows Mobile operating system, adding new capabilities that would undoubtedly mirror many of Apple's advances in the mobile space, including the Windows Marketplace for Mobile -- a clone of Apple's App Store.
"While Microsoft is involved in the design of the phone's software and hardware, a third-party is expected to make the device, just as Google Inc. has worked closely with partners to make handsets based on its Android operating system," the report says. No further details were reported. |

Apple’s engineering department is still working hard towards the summer release of iPhone OS 3.0. It has released beta 4 to developers only two weeks after beta 3 was released.
Like most Apple updates, we suspect that the new beta 4 includes several stability and performance enhancements that might make the beta more pleasing to use, if you are testing it.
It is too early to tell what kinds of changes have been made in beta 4, but we suspect that it will not take long for people to discover them. |

Best Buy has sold a customer a brick in place of an Apple MacBook Pro and is refusing to refund the purchase, according to a Consumerist report.
When I got home I opened the box and found a paving stone packed with bubble wrap, instead of the Macbook Pro.
I returned to the store and the manager, "Keith", was not too willing to help me out. He kept falling back on the line "Apple seals the boxes, not us. Take it up with Apple."
I have sent an email to Best Buy corporate and have contacted my credit card company. Unfortunately, they can't do anything until the charge posts.
So right now, I paid $2164.89 for a very nice red brick.

Birthday boy gets box of rocks instead of Nintendo DS
by Darren Murph, posted Apr 29th 2009 at 12:41PM
No, you're not being mercilessly attacked by an unyielding feeling of déjà vu for no good reason -- we really have seen something eerily similar to this happen before. This go 'round, we've got a totally innocent ten year old boy who was given Guitar Hero for DS prior to even owning a console; as the mother finally ended the tease, she handed him a shiny new DS handheld for him to unwrap. Unfortunately for everyone involved, all that was tucked inside was a couple of stones, a Chinese newspaper and boatloads of disappointment. After the Walmart store from which she purchased it referred her to the Nintendo, she furiously admitted the following: "They don't want to do nothing. They want me to keep the box of rocks. I'm not buying a box of rocks for $138." Thankfully, Wally World finally refunded her and threw in a $20 gift card for the trouble (after being hounded by a local news station, mind you), but the real damage -- losing all hope in humanity -- will never be undone. Ever.
Shake Well Before Opening
Well imagine if you buy it and had it sent to your skybox

Not iPhone/Apple related but related to last posted story
Lake Wales, Florida - Jodi Wykle of Lake Wales thought it would be funny to play a prank on her son for his 16th birthday.
She bought him Guitar Hero for Nintendo DS, even though he didn't have one. She let him sweat for awhile, but eventually handed over the newly purchased handheld game system, or so they thought.
"When he opened it, he was like, 'A box of rocks?'" she said under her breath, "He said, 'Mom, that ain't a joke.'"
The prank wasn't supposed to go that far. She fully intended to give him a real Nintendo DS game system and thought that's what she was buying from the Lake Wales Wal-Mart. She told 10 Connects there was nothing about the box that made her think twice.
"When he opened it, he was pulling the seal off, my sister-in-law carries a pocket knife and she opened it and that's when he pulled it out and it was Chinese newspaper and a bunch of rocks," she explained.
She contacted 10 Connects after she says the Wal-Mart store refused to giver her a refund. She says the store told her the item had never been returned and she needed to take the issue to Nintendo.
"They don't want to do nothing. They want me to keep the box of rocks. I'm not buying a box of rocks for $138," she said.
Since it was her son's birthday, she wanted to make sure he had something, so she bought a second Nintendo DS.
"I made them open it while I was there to make sure there was a DS in it," she told us.
Wykle says she called Nintendo when she got home, but it turns out, the box of rocks wasn't Nintendo's problem.
We contacted Wal-Mart's national reps and on a second check, the chain discovered the item Wykle purchased had been returned before. She was given a refund for the "box of rocks" and a $20 gift card for her trouble.
Now she wants to warn others, know what you're buying before taking it home.
"Have them open it before you take it out of the store and make sure you're getting the merchandise," she said.
Consumer advocacy groups agree. They advise consumers to check an item to make sure it hasn't been tampered with. If you are still concerned and know you will make the purchase, consumer advocates say you shouldn't hesitate to ask the store to open it to make sure you're getting what you paid for.
Wal-Mart emailed this statement to 10 Connects:
"Customer service is something we're passionate about at Wal-Mart. Our store looked into the situation. We are working with the customer directly to refund her money to ensure that she is satisfied with her experience at Wal-Mart."

Netbook vs iPhone in a rally car!
In this video, we decided to pit an iPhone against a netbook to see which is the true king of mobile productivity. Our challenge was simple: hop into the passenger seat of a £1m rally car alongside 14-time European Rallycross champion Kenneth Hansen, hurtle around Lydden race track in Dover, and attempt to type, 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' on to each device. Why? Because we can.
The iPhone won!

I believe (but not entirely sure, as I don't really deal with eBooks) that Cydia may have some solutions to that problem. |

A series of test shots comparing a 2.2.1 iPhone to a 3.0b4 iPhone shows a significant improvement in picture quality.
iPhones.ru took over 30 side by side photos which led them to conclude that the photo quality has been tweaked in the new firmware.
You can see some examples below…
__________
EA has released Need for Speed Undercover for the iPhone and iPod touch.
DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? Get behind the wheel of the world’s #1 racing franchise to find out! Explode into a racing frenzy on your iPhone and iPod touch in this action packed adventure of hot pursuit and betrayal.
The game features 20 of the world’s fastest and hottest cars like the Porsche Carrera GT, Nissan 370z (Z34), Lamborghini Gallardo and the Pagani Zonda F - each boasting its own unique style and performance features handling, steering, corning, and acceleration.
Incredible 3D graphics enhance this exhilarating driving experience. Sweeping camera angles intensify your ride and yield a realistic look and feel - simply put, the best visuals iPhone and iPod have to offer.
The game will take 92.3 MB of space on your iPhone and costs $9.99 to purchase.
__________
RiP Dev has released InstallerApp 1.0 for Windows to install applications onto your iPhone using USB.
It took much longer than we have anticipated, but the Microsoft Windows version of InstallerApp is finally out. It works on anything from XP to Seven, and requires an installed iTunes. Otherwise, give it a go. License purchased ties to the devices, not the app itself, so it doesn’t matter which platform you use - the activation codes will work regardless.
InstallerApp is an application that allows you easily download applications from Installer and Cydia directly onto your computer, and install them to the iPhone connected with USB cable.
