And rebel sims work for 2.2 (at least according to them) but with the software unlock a matter of days away it shouldn't matter

SRASC...good stuff here. I have a question.

I am based in NY and have a friend in Trinidad who damaged his 1st Gen iPhone. He wants a 3G as the replacement. I am an AT&T customer and own a 1st Gen iPhone. How would you recommend buying this for him? Through Apple, AT&T or another source?

Well if its a 1st gen you'd have to look through places like eBay for used ones. You wouldn't be able to find one of those from AT&T/Apple only contracted 3Gs.

No, you can still buy new 1st gen's from the Apple store. But what about buying the 3G online from AT&T? Would he be able to activate it in Trinidad or would I need to activate the phone for him up here before sending it down via my SIM?

Supreme Preferences is an application that adds additional functionality to your Settings options (similar to Extended Preferences). When you install Supreme Preferences, you will need to go into WinterBoard and select it in order to activate it. Once, you have selected it in WinterBoard, you can go into your stock Settings application (which will now have a new icon).

The majority of the new settings options are located in the Supreme Preferences options (scroll down, it’s just after the Photos option). However, it does add a few amoungst your other Settings options as well. In the General settings, you will now see an option for Auto-Dim as well as Touch Sensitivity. the Auto-Dim feature allows you to choose an how long you would like your screen to stay on before it dims. The options range from Never to 10 minutes. The Touch Sensitivity option allows you to change how sensitivity your iPhone or iPod Touch’s touch screen is. This ranges from 0.0 to 16.0. I would not suggest turning it all the way up to 16.0…it will take you 30 minutes to touch it perfectly in order to turn it back down!! Both of these features seem to work with correctly. You will also notice that it adds an iTunes option on your main settings menu. When selected, you will have the option to turn on/off Save Password.

The rest of the settings are located in the Supreme Preferences options. When selected, you will get a page that includes all the addition settings that Supreme Preferences offers. The first is On-The-Go and Genius for your iPod. You can also choose if you would like it to shuffle by Songs or by Albums. The next options are Calendar Tweaks. Here you are able to choose what time you would like your calendar to start and end the day. Though, I’m not really sure I ever got this feature to work…even after restarting my iPhone. It was the same for the next set of features as well, SpringBoard. The Show Internal Apps, Show YouTube and App Reveal Mode did not seem to work for me no matter what I tried. You will have to let me know in the comments if they worked for you.

The next set of options are the Status Bar settings. Here you can turn on/off Fake Signal Bars (for iPod Touch users), Fake Time which allows you to change the time to what ever you enter into the Fake Time String section or, you can choose from a few prefabbed phrases using the Fake Time Shortcuts option. You can also change your Carrier using the Fake Carrier option. You can choose from a from a few prefabbed phrases (the same ones as the Fake Time) using the Fake Carrier Shortcuts option. The Fake Time setting worked great for me. The Fake Carrier option worked as well however, if you already have a fake carrier set using any other application (MakeItMine), when you delete it using Supreme Preferences, it does not put your stock carrier logo back.

The last settings options are the Numeric Battery and Numeric Wi-Fi. These are both a must have for me!! They allow you to tap on either your battery and/or Wi-Fi to see the exact percentage (in numbers). Both of these options work great for me.

Overall, this application actually runs smoothly and installs nicely (doesn’t delete your previous preferences) however, there are a few things that I can’t seem to get to work. Honestly, it is always a little hit and miss with these types of applications. I have yet to see one that works completely perfectly.

iPhone nano knockoffs already on sale in Thailand (photos)

Those eagerly anticipating next month's Macworld and the prospects of a smaller iPhone should beware, as a slew of tiny clones are introducing confusion as they reach store shelves.

While silicone case molds have surfaced that allegedly hint at a smaller iPhone in the works, a rash of similarly-sized dupes made by anonymous southeast Asian firms have added to the confusion.

The devices, spotted here by an AppleInsider reader in Thailand, are almost always designed to mimic Apple's products as closely as possible and share not only the basic design but the branding as well, in some cases directly copying the logo and the "iPhone" labeling on the back.

Their software is also at times familiar and carries a similar layout, down to icons ripped directly from Apple's interface.

Aside from obvious color changes such as splashes of gold or pink, these clones are (when switched off) close enough to the original that they may pass for an iPhone nano to the untrained eye. As such, readers should be on the lookout for such claims in the run-up to January's Macworld Expo.

However fake the Thai examples may be, though, it should be noted that the alleged XSKN case shares a noticeably different design than many of the clones in shops today -- particularly a home button which sits directly on the edge of the touchscreen.

Post subject: Wal-Mart announces iPhone availability beginning Sunday
Reply with quote

Wal-Mart on Friday formally announced plans to begin carrying the iPhone later this week but will not be selling the device at rock bottom prices as once rumored.

In total, nearly 2,500 Wal-mart stores will carry the Apple handset, selling the 8GB model for $197 and the 16GB model for $297 with a new two-year service agreement from AT&T or qualified upgrade.

Wal-mart also announced that its price match policy allows stores to match the price of any local competitor's advertised store price on the iPhone should one of its rivals announce lower pricing.

"We are delighted to bring customers this ground-breaking mobile technology," said Gary Severson, senior vice president, Entertainment, Walmart. "Our electronics associates have been preparing for many weeks for the arrival of iPhone 3G. We are excited to now help new customers learn more about the features and services that make the iPhone unique."

Once inside a Wal-Mart store, customers can find more information and assistance at the Apple iPhone 3G kiosks located at the Walmart Connection Center in the Home Entertainment department.

Word that Wal-Mart would join Best Buy as the only other third-party US retailer to offer the iPhone first surfaced in October.

Walmart has announced their iPhone pricing and unfortuntly they are not $99 or 4GB. They are $197 for 8GB and $297 for 16GB. Although that might sound like bad news, you can still get iPhones for $99. AT&T is selling refurbished iPhones for $99 for 8GB and $199 for 16GB through December 31st.

We all know the iPhone can a lot of stuff but it seems that Steve & the boys in Cupertino may have skipped over one or two little things. Personally SMS delivery reports was one I feel falls into this list. You can workaround this though by putting *noti# in front of your message being sent. The *noti# will not appear in the received message.

N.B. Only tested so far with a bmobile SIM'ed iPhone (2G)

The picture above shows me testing it.

The first received message:

Message 1 wrote:
Message for [phone number] with identification 081227195938 is pending to be delivered because Absent Subscriber (code 27).

was when I sent it with the receiving phone off.

The second:

Message 2 wrote:
Message for [phone number] with identification 081227075938 has been successfully delivered on 08-12-27 at 08:00:16.

was when the message was successfully received after I turned the phone on.

So if you must know if certain or all messages are sent this would work.

There were ways in the past but like all of them are since dead. Even the no Credit Card option in iTunes doesn't work. You'd probably be better off getting a US relative or someone to buy an iTunes gift card & go from there.
If anything if you have a jailbroken iPod touch/iPhone you could install Installuous & download the App Store apps for free.

If you have a 3g, don't upgrade to 2.2 Idea

It will change your baseband and lock the phone. If you do, you can get the new rebel sim which works with it but you would not be able to soft unlock anytime soon.

Installing Installous:
In Cydia add http://cydia.hackulo.us
Then install Installous
Then in Installous search for any App Store App you want & download via the sources available. Download 1st then Install.

Upgrading to 2.2:
More than likely if you update it will re-lock the iPhone. This is normal though. You'd have to unlock & jailbreak it again after updating it with QuickPwn. This link would help with that.

Some say it doesn't, some say it does. But if works, congrats!

iPhone Dev Team wrote:
Hello all,

We wish you a very happy, healthy, and hopeful 2009!

We have released the 0.9.1 beta yellowsn0w 3G unlock application. Please note the following:

BASICS

The unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, and other established tutorial sites. Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.
The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive. There is no GUI (this is by design).
You can add the application using the sources outlined below (coming soon). There are Cydia and Installer sources available, so use whichever you are comfortable using.
yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.
DETAILS

There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus. These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” “lotto numbers” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes. Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about 10 secs 60 seconds (with v0.9.1) after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue. We’re working on a better fix.
For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you. So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.
After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed. Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.
RANDOM

The application is version 0.9 0.9.1. This is considered beta software, you use it at your own risk. You know the score.
The application is released on a non-commerical basis. Please do not accept pirates and scummy ripoffs of this software. We license this software for single use and in a non-commerical environment (meaning you can’t charge for it). The techniques and methods used are not to be used by third party companies. We are watching you Jody…we won’t be so forgiving this time.
Direct linking to the repository URLs is prohibited, please only link to this post. We will be checking referers.
Happy 2009 and enjoy!
The iPhone 3G is used all over the world with all sorts of SIM cards, and we almost certainly will see untested and unexpected situations. If the soft unlock doesn’t work for you on day 1 (literally day 1, of 2009!) then please don’t panic or be impatient. This is new territory for everyone, so enjoy the ride as much as you can Smile

RELEASE INFO

Cydia source: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/
Installer repo: http://i.yellowsn0w.com/
UPDATES

Soon you’ll see yellowsn0w 0.9.1 in the repos. It uses a much longer delay to let your SIM card initialize. If you have problems with 0.9.0, try this one and wait a full minute after you see homescreen, then reinsert sim card. We need both success and failure reports to tune this across the world, so please be patient (but please also report result!)
If you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings. Also if you are good with the command line, you can make it much easier by adding the line <string>-q</string> right after the /usr/bin/yellowsn0w line in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.iphone-dev.yellowsn0w.plist (that’s and advanced tip, hopefully someone will make a boosprefs type of tool for it)
No PIN support yet. Remember how we said this was beta? Well we’re still working out the flow for SIMs with PINs enabled. Please disable any PIN you may have on that SIM before trying yellowsn0w, for now.
The unlock will silently quit on anything other than baseband 02.28.00. It detects the wrong version and just quits to avoid any damage. Please double check your Modem Firmware setting in Settings->General->About.
