Post subject: iGPS360 Module for iPhone, iPod
Reply with quote

The iGPS360 module is a state-of-the-art GPS module that brings GPS capability to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

- The module is designed as a direct plug-in for your iPhone (both first generation and 3G) and iPod Touch (the module will not work on other iPod platforms or Apple devices). We also expect the module to work on the second generation iPod Touch once it has been jailbroken.

- The module has on-board battery back-up which will store the last acquired GPS satellite information on-board, enabling a fast GPS-lock re-acquisition time after the module has temporarily been switched off. For optimum on-board battery life and performance, it is advised that before first use of the module, you charge your iPhone/iPod Touch through the GPS module with the included USB cable for at least 16 hours. This will ensure that the battery inside of the GPS module is fully charged before first use. Overnight charging of your iPhone/iPod Touch through the GPS module should be done at least once a week in order to maintain last satellite data and user settings.

- The module is A-GPS enabled, meaning that satellite ephemeris/almanac data can optionally be uploaded to the module before you leave home. This A-GPS data enables the module to achieve an even faster cold-start GPS-lock (
- The module features a low current (
- The module ships with a 6ft micro-USB cable (USB-A to micro USB-B) which will allow you to charge and sync your iPhone/iPod Touch while the GPS module is plugged in (either at home or on the road).

- A smart keychain is currently in development that will extend the functionality of the iGPS360 module in such a way that the module can also be used on any laptop or desktop computer that has a USB port. The keychain will also allow for easy and safe storage of the iGPS360 module on your keychain when not in use. The keychain will be sold separately.

The module costs $75.00 and can be pre-ordered from Orange Gadgets at this link

The iPhone Dev-Team has made some significant progress on a 3G unlock this week.

Here’s a screenshot of a 3G iPhone whose baseband has been modified. And even though it’s modified — and fails the integrity check — it’s still running.

Running modified baseband code is a very useful ability, but it’s still not possible to accurately estimate how close we are to the ultimate goal.

Post subject: Firemail Brings Landscape Mode to iPhone's Mail App for Free
Reply with quote

We had seen not one but four iPhone apps released last week which made it possible to compose and reply to email messages in either portrait or landscape mode on the iPhone to address one of the limitations of iPhone's Mail app as it does not support landscape mode.

However, the price iPhone users had to pay for this feature ranged from $0.99 (for TouchType, Wide Email, Compose) to $1.99 (for Side Ways).

Conceited Software has recently released Firemail which brings the landscape mode to iPhone's Mail app for free.

Firemail allows iPhone users to compose and reply to email messages in landscape mode. It also allows you to save email messages within the app (mimicking the save as draft functionality).

When you launch Firemail from the home screen, you get the compose screen in the landscape mode where you can type the Subject and the body of the message.

To compose a new message; all you need to do is write the subject and body of your message and hit the button on the bottom left hand corner. Here you get options: "Send to MobileMail", "Save to Bookmarks" and "Cancel". If you select "Send to MobileMail", it opens and auto-populates iPhone's Mail app. If you select "Save to Bookmarks" it results in saving the text of the email message.

If you want to use the email message that you had saved as bookmark, you can click on the bookmark button at bottom center and select the message from the list of bookmarks. After you select the bookmarked message, you will get options to "Insert", "Delete" and "Cancel", selecting "Insert" will result in the text getting inserted in the compose screen. The "Save to Bookmarks" would have been neat feature but the current implementation is not scalable (as only last 4 bookmarks are visible on the screen).

To reply to an email, you need to open an email in iPhone's Mail app and hit reply. Then hit the home button and launch Firemail. Here you can type the body of the message and hit the button on the bottom left hand corner where you will be prompted to similar options to composing an email message, however this time selecting "Send to MobileMail", will result in turn would open and auto-pupulate the message that you wanted to reply.

As I have mentioned before, apps like Firemail are definitely not the ideal solution and I would expect Apple to add landscape mode to iPhone's mail app sometime in the future, till then Conceited Software's Firemail is a good alternative if prefer to type your email messages in landscape vs. portrait mode and its a no-brainer as it is available for free as compared to other iPhone apps on the App Store.

You can download Firemail from the App Store using this link.

Briefcase File Transfer Software for iPhone is said to be the first truly iPhone-centric file transfer software available.

Quickly download any type of file or directory to your iPhone. View your files or upload them to a friend's iPhone. Briefcase makes transferring files completely painless. It requires no cables, no client software, no switching back and forth between the iPhone and Mac, no network setup, and no typing in of an IP address every time you want to download or upload a file.

Features:
- Connect: Connect to and browse computers (and iPhones running Briefcase or Briefcase Lite) on a local network, as well as remote machines with their own internet address. In addition to Macs and iPhones you can connect to any machines supporting SSH.
- Download Files: Securely download any type of file or directory. (Note: for security reasons downloading of files from other iPhones is not supported)
- View Files: View your Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Word, Excel, MP3, M4V, and PDF files... and more
- Upload Files:Securely upload files stored in Briefcase to another Mac or iPhone. When transferring files to a Mac you can perform functions specific to the file type: set an image file as a desktop background or add it to iPhoto, for example.

Remember the iPhone scam from Russia?

Now there's a new one & its from India.
---
The iPhone 3G is being sold as SIM-free in India; however, they actually have a built in wired Turbo SIM.

This information comes via a post on the Israeli iPhone Forum, www.ipsf.co.il.

Notice what has discovered in an iPhone 3G I bought after the seller told me that the iPhone is SIM-free.

I bought the iPhone during a vacation I went to in India and the seller even showed me the iPhone is working with a local SIM card without any TurboSIM or any device as such.

After the first restore to the device I wondered after I wasn't able to activate the device normally with iTunes and had to be activated using a 3rd company activator.

After opening the device I discovered what the problem was, and here it is:

1. Unknown wires soldered to the SIM holder plus another wire disconnected completely:

2. Where are these wires going?

3. Here's what was discovered

Post subject: PwnPlayer & MewSeek Released
Reply with quote

PwnPlayer Beta 5 and MewSeek (the new iSlsk for 2.x firmware) are now available on Cydia.

PwnPlayer reads any folder inside your iPhone/iPod file system and will play mp3s the same way MobileMusicPlayer does, with playlist, artwork and add/remove/tag edit support.

MewSeek is a native P2P Soulseek client that lets you search and download music (or any kind of file) for free, straight from your iPhone or iPod Touch, using either your EDGE, Wi-Fi or 3G connection.

The developer errrick has made a few comments about these releases on his blog...

errrick wrote:
- PwnPlayer is still on its early development stages and it might still not work as fast and stable than the stock player, but it is continuously being improved as you read this message.

- MewSeek is only was released only for experimental and testing purposes. I admit it is not quite stable yet and I also had to disable a few features temporarily until I find better ways to implement them (e.g. the “Downloads” screen, the ability to prevent Wi-Fi from disconnecting when locking the device, and a few others). However, the core and basic features are working as seen in iSlsk.

- PwnPlayer website has been also launched: www.pwnplayer.com. If you have any questions, suggestions, or want to report a bug please refer to PwnPlayer forum. Don’t e-mail me.

- I also created a temporary forum for MewSeek. Go post all everything related there.

Post subject: iPhone Dev Team Crack iPhone 3G’s Baseband; Unlock Closer
Reply with quote

The iPhone Dev Team had told us last week that they had made significant progress in unlocking iPhone 3G.

They have just reported on their blog that they have managed to crack iPhone 3G’s baseband. You can checkout the significance of this breakthrough and what it means for unlocking iPhone 3G after the jump. The iPhone Dev Team had reported last week that they had made significant progress in unlocking iPhone 3G as they had modified the baseband of iPhone 3G and even though it failed the integrity check, it was still running.

Based on the latest update, it appears that the iPhone Dev Team are now even closer. They have managed to crack iPhone 3G’s baseband, this is big news because it means they have access to the core of the system required to unlock the iPhone.

It gives them the ability to manipulate the iPhone 3G hardware which will ultimately help them, unlock it so that SIMs from any carrier can be used.

The iPhone Dev team have posted a demo video of a custom application running on iPhone 3G’s baseband:

Here are some details from the dev team:

iPhone Dev Team wrote:
Nucleus is the operating system that runs on the PMB8878 baseband processor, we are using minicom running on the iPhone to talk to the basband via AT commands, the AT command shown is a custom AT command that has been inserted into the PMB8878 that starts an application on the baseband, one of the things that this application does is to lists the tasks (processes) that are running within Nucleus.

Post subject: aBunch of iPhone News

AT&T has recently begun surveying some of its longer-term iPhone buyers asking what features they would most like to see added to the Apple handset.

The survey chiefly touches on post-purchase satisfaction with both Apple and AT&T and is described by AppleInsider readers as a follow-up to a similar survey from a few months ago, or shortly after the iPhone 3G launch.

It’s also said to be gauging reactions to iPhone firmware 2.1 and whether or not the update improved the phone’s features.

A single page of the survey, however, is committed just to judging which features customers would most likely to see added to the iPhone in the future. The questionnaire asks owners to pick the top five hardware or software add-ons they’d like to see and include many of the most prominent requests made in the community, including cutting and pasting text, built-in instant messaging, Flash/Java support and MMS messaging.

A handful of the items have already been partly or completely addressed. Users can already search contacts, for example, while it’s also possible to download ringtones from iTunes on a computer but not the iPhone itself.

Readers shouldn’t necessarily interpret this as a sign of Apple’s future direction with its multi-touch device; companies regularly poll their customers to determine the level of demand for particular features.

Apple has previously said, however, that it’s continually looking to add new features to the iPhone’s software and that it was a question of priority and that copy-and-paste, directional GPS, and other features have been put on the backburner in the past to address other components first or due to complications.

iLocalis

Just released via the MMi Cydia source iLocalis the ultimate in iPhone tracking, remote control, and more.

●Never lose you iPhone. If it is missing just log onto the iLocalis site and you’ll know where it was located last. These things are expensive and losing them sucks. Problem solved.
●Retrieve a stolen iPhone. If your iPhone is stolen you can log into the site and check out where it’s at. Extra features built into iLocalis allow you to send text messages or make calls on your iPhone when you don’t even have it with you. If you iPhone is stolen log in and send yourself a text message. If the thief changed the sim card you’ll have their phone number!
●Allow your family and friends to know where you are. iLocalis will send a message to your friends when you are near by. You can also set it up to allow your friends to locate you. If your friend also has iLocalis you can send messages to each other for free. No txt messaging charges.
●Need family or someone else to know where you are? You can share a map of your location data with whomever you choose with a temporary URL that will expire when you set it to expire.
●iLocalis can also be used for a business that needs location services for their employees. Employees carrying iPhones with iLocalis can be tracked via the web site easily.

Unfortunately there is only a 10 day free trial, but you could pay $2.50USD for a year's subscription.

Google Earth integrates with the iPhone’s GPS to provide you your current location, but you can also explore different areas on earth and use the built in accelerometer to tilt and view some locations in 3D. The application is a free download from the App Store.
