Bashir’s passing was really unfortunate and he will be deeply missed.
I met him when I was 16 and just started to drive, he used to run an auto repair shop under his parents house and he would service his customers cars on Saturday and Sunday while holding down a full time job at Southern Sales. He was ambitious, always looking for ways to get ahead but still taking time to help out his friends. I used to take my dads car for the regular tune-ups but really it was an excuse to lime with Bashir and talk cars.
In those days the Ford 2000 twin cam was the hot ticket and Bashir was always talking about some new crazy project to go faster and this created quite an impression on the people around him. He always drove one of the hot cars of the day, in the early 80’s I remember his white RX-2 and my personal favorite, a white 4 door Mark 2 Escort with (u guessed it) a ford 2000, twin 40mm Side draft Carb’s, a close ratio 4 speed box, 13” Western Wheels and 205/60/13 BFG’s. That car was the ultimate, we would hear Bashir coming home from a few streets away and he generally drove it just to raise hell with the neighbors.
Funny story though, in those days (our ex PNM minister) Ralph Maraj who lived up the hill from Bashir used to put on productions of his plays in the Naps Bowl. Well he (Ralph) decides to film one of them at his home (the name slips me, probably Cynthia’s Sweetness??). Any way, while the filming production was going on, Bashir getting wind of this, started to do laps with his Escort at full pelt up and down the street. When the play was eventually aired on TTT a few weeks later, we could clearly hear Bashir blasting around outside in the escort (much to Ralph’s displeasure but Bashir loved to do sheit like that).
When I decided to enter my first rally, he took my Girlfriend (now wife) and me in his little Corolla hatchback (with Roll cage) for some training runs. Seemed simple enough, Bashir made it look as if any idiot could rally. The short story is the girl and I had some MAJOR Disagreement’s and we NEVER did another rally together despite Bashir’s encouragement many years after that. The last time we spoke was at the VK stadium event last November when he came up to compete with his son in yet another new project, a 1st generation Integra.
Bashir was a real community man, and a stalwart San Fernando person, IMO he would have made a great mayor and when he dipped his toe into politics he came very close to winning the seat. Why? Because he has the uncanny ability to really relate to people at all levels and he was loved for that. Bashir was as relaxed with his workers as he would be with his biggest clients.
His sudden loss must be a terrible for his family, especially his children and at this time there is not much that anyone can say to ease the pain and grief of Bashir’s passing. But life goes on and we know that he is in a better place surrounded by all of his past projects.
We’ll miss our friend and always remember the good time’s we had BUT
The mark 2 Escort must be warmed up and waiting to go on another joy ride.

He was an extraordinary man............. On behalf of the team from James Betts, Dean Serrao, Dwayne, and myself........ our condolences and RIP our friend.

Thoughts of my friend have constantly been on my mind since I learned of his passing.
Ever since my first car years ago and right thru the 20 odd years to my vehicles today, Bashir was always there with advice, repairs..of course all accompanied by laughs and interesting stories of his life's experiences.
In today's world where garages now charge you to change a brake bulb ( happened to me yesterday) I look back and remember the many times Bashir repaired my vehicle, even supplied parts without ever charging me a cent. Even though he ran an auto repair shop, He would honestly try to save you a dollar if he could - not a common trait in businessmen I'm sure.
I remember breakdowns at ungodly hours and just calling and having him arrive with his pickup to either provide a quick fix or tow me back to the garage. Most of all I remember his humanity - his work with the Red Cross, his genuine willingness to help others out.
I realize now, I took much of this for granted then and probably never said thankyou as many times as I should. Thank you my friend, may you rest in peace ( Though I somehow believe resting is not really your thing ) - you will be greatly missed... |

| man i cant say how much i admired this guy. i remember when i bought my audi, the left axle was busted. i met him somewhere in sando and was telling him the axle is hard to get. he told me to hold on. in 5 mins, he was back with a complete B5 audi axle in hand, and charged me just $250 once i allowed him to install. he was also the only one to sort out an acceleration problem on the gt rolla. truly a unique person. will try to be at funeral tomorrow |
