Xplode,

720 represents the number of horizontal lines that your tv carries.. (ie the height of your picture)

Lets say the standard tv has 480 lines that make up the picture, then that picture can show only a certain level of detail and sharpness.

Now lets say your tv uses 720 lines to draw its picture, you will now be able to see more detail in said picture, because the tv has more available lines (even though the tv's size has not changed). The Density of the tv's dots (pixels) has changed, and more pixels= more detail...
HD begins at 720p

So, a 1080p HDTV can effectively draw the most detailed picture because it has more lines of horizontal pixels than a 720 set.

However, as honda hoe said, the difference between 720p and 1080p can only be truly appreciated from sizes 42" and above (perhaps 40" as well)

Easy way to see this, is to look at the text in the PS3's menus on a 42" 720p set then look at the same text with the tv set to 1080p. You'll notice that on the latter, the text is a lot crisper/smoother looking.

Anyway.. at $6000.00 you can access a 32" LCD supporting upto 1080i (not the same as 1080p, but rather similar to 720p)

I bought my bedroom TV about 1 and a half years ago (32" Sharp Aquos)
its 1080i (768 lines high) and paid $8500.00 locally for it. Sad Prices are much better now.

But an interesting point to note: My parents have a 42" Sharp Aquos (2 years+ old) Supporting up to 1080i. HD content (PS3) appears quite a bit sharper, smoother on my smaller TV, because its smaller.
42"+ NEED to be 1080p
