up until now u eh say which 4A-GE u have eh...1998 Sprinter GT will carry either a Blacktop or Silvertop 20V (tho I feel is a blacktop you'll have)..
it varies, how much u can squeeze out of either one without boosting it |

well what options have u explored so far?
in stock trim, once u get the required 100RON gas u supposed to be putting out 170horses at the flywheel...figure say 150-ish at the wheels if it's M/T and 140-ish if it's A/T...I may be wrong here
as far as bolt-on mods, CAI or a SRI and tuned exhaust headers, ignition upgrades..external, stand-alone or piggyback FMU (whichever tickles your pickle), a window switch can act as a VVT controller (or a piggyback system like a VAFC which incorporates the two)...HKS has an adjustable cam gear set and a pulley kit or the 20V as well
Nitrous, can be considered by some as a "chemical turbo" of sorts...so the N/A purists will oppose this, but it's an option...the quad throttles create the high possibility of starving the cylinders furthest away from the nitrous charge tho, and worse yet if u using velo stacks, so direct port injection is the most efficient way...do LOTS of research first
since it's blacktop and it's metering the intake via a MAP sensor, u can ditch the stock airbox and opt for some velocity stacks...some re-routing of the vacuum hoses for A/C and cold start idle-up is necessary, but not impossible
not much to do with internals really...Tom's/Toda/HKS cams are a nice addition..I believe Tom's has a complete valvetrain kit available...then there's the usual port and polish
but above all, octane is your main obstacle here buddy...there's little tuning things to be done with a stock 20V...MAF tweaking, timing and plugs and the piss gas we get at the pump will always keep it from reaching its potential...
do some research into water injection, I think it's a viable option to cool the intake charge and improve octane at the same time, BUT like nitrous, cylinder starvation is a concern as well...but you're a smart guy, you can come up with something |

| well gt corolla's come around 160-175hp his regular corolla comes with 95hp he add on the turbo kit with 8lbs boost lets say 1lb giving you 5hp gain so he has 40hp gain all toghether he has 135hp much shy of a GT COROLLA. |

lol..I'm no mechanic...I read up and dig up in my ride just like anyone else on this forum
but there are boosted 4A-FE's all over that'll put a serious beating on ur GT eh..don't get cocky cuz ur buddy didn't do it correctly..there was one in Bim a while back that cranked out something like ~250hp at the wheels if I remember correctly
the 4A-FE can't take any fair amount of boost without internal work...let's say 6psi max without an intercooler and maybe 8psi with it....compression needs to be lowered, stonger pistons and con rods (say from a GZE), then there's the issue of fuel management, the flimsy 6bolt flywheel (I'd prefer an 8-bolt wheel for that kinda juice) and the econo crankshaft that likes to take a cool stroll when u play with ur redline too much (and redline is only around 6300rpm or thereabouts)
if your buddy was doing the bulk of the work himself, then it'd prolly be worthwhile if parts are easy to come by...but to put that much time and effort into building a boosted 4A-FE monster isn't worth it IMO...he's better off working on a GZE |

does not always have to make sense sometimes people do things just because the think it can be done.
i wouldda do it too just for the experience. |

I think its me you talking about and I don't need/want your pity.... Instead of thinking maybe I can do this too, yuh gone trying to pull meh down...
So are you sure I can't beat it from dead stop? If you infront already it go stress the engine to pass. But from dead stop, you'll understand the meaning of TurboCharge...
BTW it's not 8lbs I'm running... Anyway to help yuh wid your project, which is what this is about. Check out these:
http://www.turbospecialties-race.com/toyota/TC2001s.asp - They work well with customs.
http://www.cometic.com/ - these gaskets can help you get up to 12lbs along with the water-injection from http://www.coolingmist.com
The engine/fuel management are your choice.
The 5A internals are really strong. After running at max recommended boost I took out the head to change the gasket and the pistons were like new (water-injection). The 4A-G 20V has even stronger internals so you could theoretically get up to 14lbs, but for safety stick to 10lbs.
If yuh need any other ideas for power try asking some local ppl, you'd be surprised the amount knowledge that exists here... |

the black top have a higher compressio ratio...S/T= 10.5:1....B/T=11:1
in the black top the connection rods are lighter...supposedly this allows the engine to rev higher easier and theyre supposed to be better balanced, but most cases have proven the ae101 (S|T)connection rods to be stronger
Also the silvertop ran on an AFM sensor, with the blacktop running on a MAP sensor. |
