|
|
I have lost count of how many time i have rebuilt my kick panel with each time i try to improve on my last one.
This time i am attempting to point source even more of my sound to create even more accurate imaging and soundstage with even better depth.
The morel point source 6" speaker integra ovation xo seemed to meet these requirements on paper so i decided to give them a try.
Straight out the box an rta was put on these speakers in the car, midrange up to the high freqs looked normal for any high end speaker but with the midbass suffering from a very sharp rolloff.
I was a bit dissapointed and determined that this had to be install related.
In the build pics i stuffed behind the speaker with very thick acoustic foam. I believed i stuffed too much and decided to take it all out then rta again. I did this and amazingly low end response increased again!
after about 3 weeks of moderate playing an even further increase in low end response was noted which finally gave justice to this international brand.
"Moral" of this story is GIVE your speakers room to breathe behind them and give your speakers time to break in! it wil be worth it!
Other than this point imaging and depth etc is as expected....those who heard this may comment.
Any questions feel free to ask.
Simple mdf baffle was cut out. The back was chamfered(pic left out)
area was dampened and foam was added(too much) luckily this vehicle has a big space behind the kick
baffle attached to the car with metal screws and speaker was mounted
Area was taped off and screw mounting holes were marked off
Foil was added in preparation for fibreglassing to create cover for kickpanel
Glass hardened.
External passive crossovers with mylar caps etc used in the point source.
Stage is high with the kick playing full range with strong midbass being produced with the huge cavity behind the kick also venting to the outside of the car via drain hole.
Pretty simple build but effective |

normally for competition, sq build logs hardly shows finished pics as the judge is able to see the finished product there already
but il have to check i may have a few more pics

hm which part in particular you would like to see
i used 'kitty hair' mat as i find these are able to take the curves better with very good bonding due to the randomness of the strand
about 4 layers were used. |

If it was a pipeline or boat I woulve known flat out lol, I mean the basic concepts are the same. But with this area of fiberglassing is fairly new to me..so I like to see car audio with fiberglass builds so I can pick up on it more, also less people would be intimidated by trying a diy if they see a bit more detail rather than foil n when it's basically almost done.. No offence
jeff
I personally wouldve liked to see how u secured it, how u covered it an the steps leading to covering it or atleast explain what you did

search there and be satisfied.
pimp be aware though that no matter how much detail you see online you can really only understand the process when you attempt it yourself. |

i found a few more pics will post them when i get chance but i used a little mold release thats all. Filler and foam were used afterwards to create the shape.
careful laying down of mat and preparation is the key here
i used a small brush which i have been using for the year now, a brush lasts me about a half to a whole year depending on how much i use it
fabrication is very time consuming and money consuming so any resources that can be preserved are well paid attention too.
The spots i marked of on the tape i used metal screw to secure the glass to the car afterwards.
Gloves and Industrial strength respirator are also a must.
Resin fumes are extremely dangerous and should also not be taken lightly. |
