FIA to sue over breakaway attempt
| Quote: | Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, says it will begin legal proceedings over plans to set up a rival world championship next year.
The F1 Teams Association (Fota) said on Thursday that eight of its major teams were planning to set up a rival championship for the 2010 season.
But FIA lawyers say the actions of Fota as a whole and Ferrari, in particular, amount to breaches of law.
They say they will issue legal proceedings without delay.
The statement added: "The actions of Fota as a whole, and Ferrari in particular, amount to serious violations of law including wilful interference with contractual relations, direct breaches of Ferrari's legal obligations and a grave violation of competition law.
"Preparations for the 2010 FIA Formula 1 World Championship continue but publication of the final 2010 entry list will be put on hold while the FIA asserts its legal rights."
Delaying the publication of the entry list gives the parties room for manoeuvre as they search for a compromise over the issue.
The row centres on plans by world motorsport boss Max Mosley to introduce budget cap proposals.
Mosley wants to introduce a voluntary £40m budget cap for teams to curtail a "financial arms race" in F1.
Fota say they, too, are committed to cutting costs, but refused to agree to his conditions.
It prompted championship leader Brawn GP, Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso to take their drastic action.
Brawn GP team owner Ross Brawn said that at the moment the relationship between the teams and the FIA was 'difficult'.
"The teams' ambition is not to take over F1, but they have a massive investment in it," he said. "They want their investment protected."
Asked if Mosley going would solve the problem, Brawn said: "It's in no way a condition of the conditional entry the Fota teams have made.
"It's not something the Fota teams are pushing for or asking for. It has not entered discussions."
However, Mosley told the BBC that he was confident there would be one Formula 1 world championship next season.
"We had to take legal proceedings. That's all part of the process, but the moment they come to their senses that will all stop," he said.
"This is posturing and posing and it will stop before the start of 2010 and the first race of next season in Melbourne and settle down.
"They can't get the backing they need and will come back."
Brawn, McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh and Red Bull's Christian Horner have refused to comment on the FIA's legal threat saying they had only just been informed of it and had not seen the details. |

mosley is retarded to take legal action, all the teams have to do if they are forced to race under 2010 conditionns is not race. call in sick the day of the race |

Max: FOTA chaos may force me to stay on
Friday 19th June 2009
Max Mosley has said the words many Formula One fans were hoping not to hear: I'm not quitting.
The FIA President in fact even went as far as to say that the current political crisis in Formula One may force him to run for re-election in October.
"I don't want to go on too long, but the difficulty they are putting me in is that even if I wanted to stop this October, they are making it very difficult for me to do so," said he told the BBC.
"So actually everything they are doing is counterproductive because the people in the FIA are saying we have all this trouble, we are being attacked and you must stay.
"Whereas if we had peace and I said I would actually like to stop in October, then they are very nice. They all say they want me to stay, but they wouldn't really mind and someone else would come along."
Mosley's comments come in the wake of fresh calls for his resignation made by F1 personality as Jackie Stewart, who reckons Mosley's is largely to blame for Friday's decision by FOTA to leave F1 and start their own series.
Mosley, however, doesn't believe FOTA will carry through on their threat.
"I don't take it as seriously as some people do because I know that it is all posturing and posing," he said.
"It will all stop sometime between the beginning of 2010 and March 2010, the first race. All this will stop, it will all settle down and everyone will go racing."
"I am completely confident because in the end people do what it is in their interests to do.
"It is in the interests of the teams to be in the F1 world championship and there is actually no fundamental or important issue that is stopping them taking part.
"It is all about personalities and power and who can grab what from whom, which is easy when nothing is at stake but when it gets to the first race and it is make your mind up time, they will be there." |

Qualy: Vettel pips the wrong Brawn to pole
Saturday 20th June 2009
Sebastian Vettel claimed pole position for Sunday's British GP beating a Brawn GP driver, but it wasn't the one British fans were hoping for.
Vettel, who had the measure of his rivals for two of the weekend's three practice sessions, put his revised RB5 to good use on Saturday afternoon, taking pole position with a 1:19.509.
That put him ahead of a Brawn GP driver, however, it was Rubens Barrichello and not Jenson Button. Barrichello finished 0.347s behind the German, while Button could only manage sixth place on his home grid.
Mark Webber was third for Red Bull, finishing ahead of Jarno Trulli and Kazuki Nakajima.
Meanwhile, a huge accident for Adrian Sutil with 24s left on the clock in Q1 cost Lewis Hamilton any chance of making it through to the next segment. He will start P19. Sutil, thankfully, escaped unhurt although his Force India was destroyed.
Full report to follow...

F1 deal ends threat of breakaway
An agreement has been reached between Formula 1's governing body and the teams to prevent a breakaway series, says FIA president Max Mosley.
The two parties had been engulfed in a bitter row over planned budgetary and technical changes for the 2010 season.
But it appears a resolution has now been found and, as part of the deal, Mosley has agreed not to stand for re-election as president.
"There will be no split. We have agreed to a reduction of costs," added Mosley.
"There will be one F1 championship but the objective is to get back to the spending levels of the early 90s within two years."
F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone added that he was "very happy common sense has prevailed" following a meeting of 120 members of the FIA in Paris aimed at resolving the crisis.
Ferrari chief president Luca di Montezemolo, head of the Formula One Teams Association (Fota), added: "I think the decisions we have shared this morning are important. We will have the rules of 2009, same rules for everybody.
"It means that we have stability."

Ferrari to confirm Alonso @ Italian GP
5 yr contract
http://www.planetf1.com/story/0,18954,3213_5407349,00.html
I really hope this is just speculation. I would really find it hard to support Ferrari with Alonso as their #1 or as a matter of fact #2 driver |

Alonso is very good and has loads of experience and technical know-how but i think Vettel is the future...
seems like planetF1 is right:
Raikkonen to make WRC debut in Finland
The 2007 Formula One world champion Kimi Raikkonen is no stranger to the pressures of Formula One racing, but the Ferrari driver is set to sample a different motorsport challenge next month, after agreeing to make his World Rally Championship debut at July’s Neste Oil Rally Finland.

A step too far for Ecclestone?
Saturday 4th July 2009
Never one to side step controversy, Bernie Ecclestone has been quoted as saying that Adolf Hitler was a man who "was able to get things done" and that Max Mosley would do a better job than Gordon Brown or Tony Blair.
The outspoken Ecclestone has in the past walked a very thin line but his latest comments are bound to be interpreted as some as overstepping the mark.
Adolf Hitler was a man who "was able to get things done," Ecclestone told The Guardian.
"In a lot of ways, terrible to say this I suppose, but apart from the fact that Hitler got taken away and persuaded to do things that I have no idea whether he wanted to do or not, he was in the way that he could command a lot of people, able to get things done.
"I prefer strong leaders. Margaret Thatcher made decisions on the run and got the job done. She was the one who built this country up slowly. We've let it go down again. All these guys, Gordon and Tony are trying to please everybody all the time... Max would do a super job, he's a good leader."
He added that he doesn't believe that having Sir Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists, as his father should count against Max.
"I don't think his background would be a problem," he continued. "Politicians are too worried about elections. We did a terrible thing when we supported the idea of getting rid of Saddam Hussein, he was the only one who could control the country. It was the same with (the Taliban)."
The F1 supremo, though, did backtrack a bit on his "it's a joke" comments when Lewis Hamilton was mocked by some Spanish spectators last season. Now he says "if they do it again, I will go and find them and make them come and meet Lewis Hamilton." |

Ferrari deny Alonso rumours - again
Friday 3rd July 2009
Not for the first time - and PF1 seriously doubts if it will be for the last time either - Ferrari have denied signing Fernando Alonso.
Earlier this week, Diario AS reported that Fernando Alonso would be heading to Ferrari next season, having signed a five-year contract.
The Spanish daily even went as far as to say that the Scuderia would be confirming the Spaniard on the Friday of the Italian GP weekend and would be including him in their post-season parties.
Ferrari, though, have denied the report.
"We are not going to waste our time commenting on these rumours," Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni told the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.
"Everyone should remember (Felipe) Massa and (Kimi) Raikkonen have contracts that include 2010." |

it begins again...
FOTA teams stage fresh walk-out
Wednesday 8th July 2009
The future of Formula One is again "in jeopardy" after the eight members of FOTA walked out of a meeting with the FIA.
Just two weeks after peace appeared to have broken out in the wake of FOTA's threat to form a breakaway series, the battle lines have seemingly been drawn again.
The latest dispute centres around the legality of the eight teams' entry into next season's world championship, and voting rights in relation to the technical and sporting regulations. |
