Its not a cheat per se, but most of the teams percieve at as such, so around most F1 forums and sites you'll see fans and journalists referring to it as the 'cheat' diffuser!

Press Release
World Motor Sport Council 07/04/2009
EXTRAORDINARY MEETING OF THE
WORLD MOTOR SPORT COUNCIL

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes has been invited to appear before an extraordinary meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council in Paris on Wednesday, 29 April, 2009, to answer charges that, in breach of Article 151c of the International Sporting Code, it

* on 29 March, 2009, told the stewards of the Australian Grand Prix that no instructions were given to Hamilton in Car No. 1 to allow Trulli in Car no. 9 to pass when both cars were behind the safety car, knowing this statement to be untrue;

* procured its driver Hamilton the current World Champion, to support and confirm this untrue statement to the stewards;

* although knowing that as a direct result of its untrue statement to the stewards, another driver and a rival team had been unfairly penalised, made no attempt to rectify the situation either by contacting the FIA or otherwise;

* on 2 April, 2009, at a second hearing before the stewards of the Australian Grand Prix, (meeting in Malaysia) made no attempt to correct the untrue statement of 29 March but, on the contrary, continued to maintain that the statement was true, despite being allowed to listen to a recording of the team instructing Hamilton to let Trulli past and despite being given more than one opportunity to correct its false statement;

* on 2 April, 2009, at the second stewards' hearing, procured its driver Hamilton to continue to assert the truth of the false statement given to the stewards on 29 March, while knowing that what he was saying to the stewards was not true.

I don't see it...McLaren has too large a fan base, and the Stepneygate was a much bigger scandal....that said the combination of the both could really be a big problem for them?

Btw anyone else thinks Whitmarsh bit the bullet for Hamilton? Based on the radio transmission, it seems that hamilton was really pushing to get back that spot anyway he could...

Not Whitmarsh

Dave Ryan was put as the scapegoat in this entire fiasco. McLaren have offically cut all ties with him.

if they kick mclaren out that will really hurt f1 IMHO alot of people are of the view that the FIA victimizes them (from what I've read on other forums)
and as Peds said they have a large fan base, esp. alot of brits. due to Hammy being there.

my apologies for misquoting you.
i was unaware that this is what it's being called at present.

as for McLaren being kicked out, it's not going to happen. Bernie is not going to let anything adversly affect his bottom line

Lewis Hamilton's future with McLaren said to be in doubt

Is Lewis Hamilton really on his way out at McLaren? The Daily Mail think it's a definite possibility. It seems the reigning World Champion still has some issues with his team after the so-called "Liargate" scandal robbed him of his hard-fought third-place finish in the season opener at Melbourne. We explained that scandal in our earlier post about the race, but briefly, Hamilton was allegedly told how to answer post-race questions about a safety-car passing incident by McLaren sporting director Dave Ryan. The team was found guilty of deliberately misleading the race stewards. Ryan was subsequently suspended and Lewis had all of his points taken away after offering an emotional public apology.

Normally, that would be that, but after another disappointing race in Malaysia, it seems Lewis and his manager/father Anthony are asking McLaren for a meeting. Speculation is that Hamilton may be asking for an early release from his contract -- if not immediately, than possibly at the end of the season. The Hamiltons are apparently concerned that the champion's personal reputation has been sullied as a result of the team's recent scandals. Anthony maintains that Lewis was merely following team orders, defying his own moral code in taking Ryan's advice. He adds that contractual obligations prevented Lewis from offering the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth when interviewed by the stewards. The fact that McLaren still faces further sanctions from the incident (including the possible suspension of team boss Martin Whitmarsh) could mean that Hamilton has more leverage in his negotiations.

If Hamilton does get out of his five-year contract, one scenario has him going to Ferrari, who is struggling even more than McLaren this season. We'd wager on Brawn GP making a bid, along with just about every other team as well.

'Rubens could be the biggest loser in liargate'
Monday 13th April 2009

Rubens Barrichello could be the biggest loser should McLaren be banned by the WMSC, as there's speculation in the British media that Lewis Hamilton could then take his race-seat.

the diffusers are legal

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12433_5190760,00.html
Quote:
"The FIA International Court of Appeal has decided to deny the appeals submitted against decisions numbered 16 to 24 taken by the Panel of the Stewards on March 26 at the Australian Grand Prix and counting towards the 2009 FIA Formula One World Championship.

"Based on the arguments heard and evidence before it, the court concluded that the stewards were correct to find that the cars in question comply with the applicable regulations.

"Full reasons for this decision will be provided in due course."

It was the best outcome for the sport in my view

well its now everybody rushing to get their diffuser on...am glad they got the green light for it, any kind of innovation of that type should be encouraged and the rest of the field has to play catch up now and if it was deemedto be illegal...you could imagine the bacchanal that would have caused!

Its legal so they'll keep them...
Time for Ferrari, McLaren and co to start developing theirs...
RBR have already started, and God help the rest of the teams if it works...they're already as fast as Brawn and Toyota without them...

I sure the rest of the teams have started development on their diffusers since Brawn had theirs out..just a matter of time before we see them on.
