i got my hands on a hyundai elantra xd-model and thus far i have no problems with the car. I did usual maitainance on it.....I changed the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid and flushed out the radiator. I also changed the belts and got the exhaust manifold welded to take care of a hairline crack. After making sure each tyre is properly pressured and did a 4-wheel alignment and check the camber and wheel balance, my ride quality has improved dramatically and it was not bad even before my maintainance. I also changed the shocks (Monroe) and the original springs are faultless. Whatelse, I flushed the EFI system and did an ECU diagnosis and nothing is wrong neither are there any pending codes. The engine is pretty powerful considering its a heavy car for its age and type. The 1.6L DOHC 16V engine is no match for a 1.6 VVT-i Corolla or Mazda 3 but its refined, silent and is very fuel efficient. I cant get enough of this car actually considering what its worth but its so damn spacious inside coupled with a huge trunk and Im amazed what little money can do. The interior is pretty stylish to me, especially with the blue instrument cluster that is contrast adjustable, digital auto climate control and digital clock, outside temp. display and trip computer/digital odometer. The a/c was serviced and blows ice cold even on hot days. the stock cd stereo was amazing, i thought the speakers were changed and the seats display no wear and tear. It has a high grade fabric and has sunglasses holder and individual map light for the front seat passengers! The backseat has adjustable head rests and is split foldable. The power antennae works all the time and goes straight down the hatch.

Overall, this car has totally changed my perception of the Hyundai brand and i'm actually looking forward for a Sonata (roro) or a Tucson (new or even used). There are obvious quality issues though, like the fuel lid opener which is made of plastic, a piece of it broke and the front passenger visor with the mirror attached has a plastic lid cover that broke off. The dash closer to the windsheild has a slight crack but Thanks to proper dash treatment thats all it will ever go. This vehicle easily makes 190+ kmph with a/c on and its automatic. Its high speed stability is amazing but its handling around main roads and roads with pot holes makes the car jiggle left and right. It gives me the impression that this car was never made to see rough roads yet its cradle assembly in front IMHO is stonger than an Almera's own by far. The turning radius can't match a B14's own and I don't have power foldable mirrors. Who cares anyway, is contrast to my Wingroad, I'll choose the Elantra as a better daily driver (more luxurious and more features) but in terms of confidence and pulling up to a party, at least I'll take the Nissan, you know the same folks who made infiniti? Laughing I'm impressed otherwise and will post detailed images of the exterior and interior of my car as soon as I get a new digicam.

Oh, I have Nissan 200SX front brakes in the Elantra, the thing does grab harder than a bench clamp. Shocked

This first tune up should comprise the following unless you know the service history of the car:
- Change oil and oil filter (should be done every 5,000 km)
- Change fuel filter (should be done every 10,000 km)
- Change air filter (should be done every 10,000 km at most)
- Change spark plugs (should be done every 20,000 km)
- Check engine timing (should be done every 5,000 km)
- Clean carburettor (if equipped, should be done every 5,000 km)
- Clean fuel injectors (if equipped, cleaning interval should not exceed 20,000 km)
- Flush out and replace coolant (should be done every 20,000 km)
- Flush out and replace brake fluid (should be done every 20,000 km)
- Flush out and replace clutch fluid (should be done every 20,000 km)
- Inspect drive belts - alternator, air-conditioning and power steering (should be done every 5,000 km)
- Check over suspension and tighten/replace whatever is necessary (should be done every 5,000 km)
- Check brakes and replace as necessary (should be done every 5,000 km)
- Check wheel balance and alignment (interval for re-checking this all depends on the road conditions over which you drive, but you should check it about every 6 months for a minimum)

That should hold you out until the 60,000 km service when, in addition to the above, you should:
- Replace all drive belts (should be done every 60,000 km)
- Replace timing belt and tensioner (should be done every 60,000 km)
- Replace gearbox oil (should be done every 30,000 km)

You should try and get your hands on a Neal and Massey Service Schedule for the Hyundai cars, but what I have written above basically covers it.

When you drop the Elantra to service, N&M will leave the service schedule (a kind of spreadsheet) inside the car for you. Keep it for future reference when the car is off the warranty and if you choose the get the car serviced outside of the firm.

I followed that service schedule with an Accent that was bought new from the firm. Kept the car for 10 years and 343,000 km (only once the engine had to be re-built and I used genuine HMC parts) without any major problems.

What happened to it?

I hope you at least changed it out with a Mitsu engine (older Hyundai engines were based on the Mitsu designs) and not some Nissan SR engine. Very Happy

can anyone tell me which project they would choose and why...
33 hertz,
I have a 98 accent and I have the identical problem! It takes 3 tumbles after sitting idle for a few hours. After sitting overnight it takes 4. It races then dies down and repeats this cycle every 15 seconds or so until it warms up. Then it idles reasonably well. My mechanic sais it was the injectors that needed cleaning. He cleaned them but it did not help. Also it seems tolack power but I had a 2000 model that was only 2 years old at the time it was stolen from me and that also lacked power. I don't know if it is just the engine design or if it may be spark or valve timing. Any experiences in this area will be appreciated.

Peter
