| I need help, im looking for a pair of 8" loudspeakers (dj speakers) for mids/"mid heights" for a gallary/everyday listening application for a cousin of mine. He already has a pair of mid bass speakers (dont know brand or model), the setup will be going into a b12. My question is what brand? something on par or of similar quality as rcf and the likes, and also what are key factors i should look for when selecting these speakers? |

it all come's down to how much you willing to spend.....
and you said that you already have a pair of mid bass speakers.....so you could probably go with a nice pair of drivers? |

if cost is a factor, i would strongly recommend the Audiopipe APMB 8.. they get pretty loud and sound great!

| I understand it all comes down to how much im willing to spend but, i want to get some ideas so that i can find something that suits his needs. Im new to the whole dj speakers in car scene but im not a complete noob. and yes, the car already has a pair of midbass speakers what he wants now is a nice pair of drivers to get the mid frequencies as well as some other frequencies higher up in the scale. Basically something to fill in the frequencies hes missing. |

True..  but thing is what makes this speaker (the audiopipe speaker) capable of reproducing the higher mid frequencies or not? Is there a "dj speaker" capable of reproducing a broad range of mid frequencies as well as higher frequencies in one? or is this only achievable by using a 3 way system (ie pair of midbass, pair of mids, bullet tweeters) |

Ciare has some pretty smooth sounding compression drivers..
i have a pair of the CD44K comp drivers and love how they sound..
response graph
they perform best from 1500Hz up though.. |

you could use a pair of Passive crossovers coupled to both the, for example, APMB 8"s and the CDK44's to cover a wider range of frequencies..
take a look at a previous setup i had..
notice the passives on the back of the mid / high range box..
the advantage of using passives is you will not have any impedance - amp matching issues while using 2 pairs of speakers..  |

A Compression Driver is a type of loudspeaker driver which uses the technique of "compression" to achieve high efficiencies. I think i've found a solution to one of the problems!
but dont you also need to get the horn piece matched to the specific driver? How do i go about that?

Sweet! What made you want to change that setup? Would you say you were missing certain frequencies or was everything properly matched? |

you choose the horn for your compression driver by looking at it's dispersion range, frequency response range and throat entry diameter.
(i am having trouble accessing the 18sound website) but i am currently using the 18sound XT120 horn.
some specs on this horn..
Coverage: 90H x 60V
Size: 1-inch exit
Frequency Response: 1600-20kHz
Material: ABS
Crossover Frequency: 1500 Hz.
you can see the wide(ish) 90degree horizontal dispersion of the horn and it's freq range matches up quite nicely with the 1- 17 kHz freq range of the Ciare CD44k

a narrow dispersion range, like 45deg (H) by 45deg (V) will sound very loud when you stand directly in front of it, and have a steep roll off as you step to the side..
a wider dispersion range will cover more area, but sound slightly softer when you stand in front of it..
choose the dispersion range according to where you want it to be heard.. |

everything was perfectly matched.. the mid / high range enclosure effective freq range went from 120Hz up..
it sounded great! but as i had everything facing forward inside my vehicle, it sounded really soft on the outside, especially in a noisy car show environment..
as a daily setup, i would give it 8.5/10 |
