great enough vibrations can damage the platters on hard drives
so even if it can work , it may be more suceptible to data loss than solid state media |

yes it could.
IIRC on pioneer's site a while ago for the 6900UB series they demonstrated the USB feature of the deck using an external HDD. |

external solid state drive is no different to a usb stick with larger capabilities
only issue will be if the usb port had enough current to power the drive |

| sometimes the head unit itself limits the capacity which it can read (some can only go up to 16gb, so try it first) |

| yes it can but many ppl including meh padna runs up to 40gig (western digital 40 HD) it works but you will need a external casing and a DC to AC supplier to supply the current for the HD cause the deck cannot sustain such a load. Also the HD has to be formatted and not partitioned, and when formatting ...formatt it as a flash drive is and it will work . Had it running on a 690UB. Also for some strange reason only the western digital 40 gig works nothing higher and no other brand. |

i used a 160gb western digital passport on a pioneer 6000ub, but could not use the extension, i had to connect it directly to the rear of the head unit.
When i used the extension the initial load time was too long. it loaded but took like 10 minuted to load the entire drive full of music, without the extension it was like 2-3 mins. |

was wondering if anyone would notice that
a lot of drives (especially the non-solid state ones) use two usb inputs - one for power, one for data, or they have an external power source |

I also have a WD Passport 160g. but what is the extension? this drive is power by the USB. |

the extension is the usb extender that makes it possible for you to plug in a memory stick and not have it behind the head unit, basically the cord that makes the USB on the back of the head unit longer.
Well when i connected the HDD using just cord that came with the hard drive it worked faster. |

richiepooh, yes some drives or sizes of drives work on some decks. Before you buy the best bet is to try it from a friends drive possibly.
But this:

... is serious talk. The read heads can scratch the platters and firetruck up the disk. It is not even advisable to walk around with a laptop that's on far less drive through pot-holes with a non-solid-state drive. |

some harddrives come now with sensors to stop the head wen shocks above rating Gs are detected. the harddrive will use its buffer memory in the mean time..
realistically, one cannot mashup a harddrive by driving, once using a disk with the features above eh, but is trinidad road. even though some can, and are made to operate at certain shock levels, with our roads.... i call 32gb flashdrive on this! |

| but I head of those in some IBMs but any drive you would be using sold by WD or otherwise for cheap will not have this feature. And realistically, yes you can damage a drive by driving. |

sure the drive will not crash instantly but bad sectors develop. In the states there can still be shock sustained to the drive. If you slam a brakes even.
Interestingly enough though, I remember a Rockford unit that used WiFi to sync songs from ur PC to a hard-drive unit in car. I haven't heard of that in quite a while.
Bottom line is it is highly not recommended.
I ain't arguing eh Chiney, I jus saying |

that drive is solid state^^^
most solid state drives are usb flash drives, but there are mass storage solidstate drives
most of them are used in ultra portable notebooks
they aren't that expensive either, if i remember correctly, the one i had was a 16gb, and cost arouond $800
yea this was last year jan,so 16gb's was plenty |

Chiney,
a solid state drive uses no discs, but rather chipsets that are very capable of handling shocks ect
there are now solid state hdd
the same concept is the usb, solid state
u ever see a usb being destroyed in a car? |

Ok folks this thread gone off topic.
Here's the deal very simple its simply about compatibility.
Eg. Pioneer HU. Spec- usb 2.0, supports up to 300gb, FAT file system. Usb voltage 2.2v around there.
Typical flash drive operates with a very low voltage however a typical external hard disk requires 5.0v which is supplied of a pc usb port.
The deck however is only 2.2v. Unless your drive is capable of utilizing an external power source eg. An adaptor of some sort to supply the voltage it will not work!
Next thing if you are able to meet the power requirements please remember the drive must be formatted to FAT file system, and equiv or less than 300gb. (pioneer deck)
If your drive manages to work... Or does so for short periods without meeting these requirements please note that you are putting strain on your HU as it was not designed to operate under such conditions and can also damage your drive due to under voltage.
Just my 2cents.. |
