there are marks on the cam gear an crank gear that align with marks on teh head/cover an teh block/cover for the crank gear. if it is hard to see give it a lil wash out or wipe out an you should be able to see it. btw which engine twin cam or single cam? for easier way take out number 1 spark plug an insert a long thin screwdriver into plug hole number 1. spin the crankshaft until the screwdriver is at its highest point, b4 it starts to go back down. all this is done b4 the assembly is disassembled btw. look on the cover where you see the crank shaft pulley that drives the acc. belts and you will see the timin marks on teh cover(0, 10, 20) an the crankshaft pulley has a marked grooved on it dat supposed to line up with the 0 on the cover. check the cam gears to see dat they also line up with their marks. for any trouble jus give me a cal an i cud do the work for you also...

so you telling him to scrap grooves into his cams?

why not just remove the valve cover and look at the cams Idea
also it might have a small opening/hole on the cam that points perfectly vertical when piston 1 is at tdc. (i dont know if this is standard for all)

you guys are "reading" to much into this...

turbohead has a valid approach...

and no he's not referring to the cam shafts (read crankshaft)...

have you guys ever seen someone dial in an aftermarket cam???

maybe cause you guys don't know but his explanation but it is basic timing for most overhead valved engines...

give the guy a break his advice is good...

if you've never worked on engines before then you'd probably shouldn't be hating...

Regards...

Download. Print. Boil. Drink.

Download the Engine workshop manual. It's all there. Timing marks, tensioner, etc.
