Friend have a 101 corolla 1.6 carb. He uses shell 25-50. When the oil is about 4000km old the car requires a slight top up of oil. When the oil is brand new <4000km no oil top up is needed. Millage 206000km. Is this a sign of the engine going through? Or what can be done to prevent this?

a bit of oil comsumption is pretty normal actually...how much consumption depends on the engine's design and age/health...if u only NOW need to top up at 4000km then you're in pretty good condition before your 5000km change interval anyway...even so, at +206,000km that's commendable

^^^I would agree.....a slight top up at 4k isn't bad considering the mileage.....

it pays to change your oil on time.. i'm doing over 240,000kms on the Vitara and the engine barely burns any oil over the 5000kms.. at most it might drop 1/3 way between the upper and lower marks on the dip stick..
