at about 60kmph the constant max hp is gained since the high rpm remains steady...so that means it is faster than a manual right? I'm considering converting to manual but from what was described on some websites the only disadvantages are the sluggish take off and high maintenance

Hp to Hp...on a roll you should be faster in a CVT since you maintain a high rpm and don't need to shift.... from a stop... a CVT car will get burnt.

Where's the fun in a CVT tho....limited or no bornouts, no chirping of tyres between gears, no clutch popping Sad
I have seen runs with SR20s, pound for pound the same setup with the only difference being box vs CVT and as X2 said the launch from a dead stop went to the box, esp in the crowd pleaser category. Very Happy
However, any driver error with the box gave way for an advantage 2 the CVT.
Also distance between gear changes gave a fraction of a length gain to the CVT.
Me, I still luv meh box, but depending on your sit'n the CVT is a reasonable compromise.
As for maintenance, treat your CVT good (ie follow the dealer guide to servicing) and she'll return the favour.

I've have both and still prefer the manual to the CVT. The manaual can take roughing up and if you tweek your engine properly you can maximise the output.

CVT needs to much care and attention , overall the speed is supposed to build up faster than a manual. Now this depends on the type of CVT , if you talking Honda VI you on, if you talking Mitsui GDI god help you, the Mitsui is one of the most sluggish CVT's around. Also thefluid generally in most CVT's needs to changed evry 20,000km.

I've only changed the clutch once in my car (about 8yrs) Wife honda is 4 yrs and changed trans fluid about 4 times already.

I own the Civic Vi and it's alot of fun watching the revs max out and the car continuing to acclerate. From a roll, the car is very quick! One time, i managed to keep up with a Subaru Forester S/Turbo!

Taking off from a stand still though makes me want to kill the damn thing! I can either get kept up with or outrun by supposidly slower cars. It has advantages and disadvantages like every other transmission ever built.

CVT is nice but i hated it since it couldn't handle the rough up...that's y i did the conversion; only then u see what the engine can really do Razz and as said before it is cheap to maintain

The VI i drive is a 99 model and i'm certain it could take those other cars, take off at least .Try the sport mode and put in a k&n drop in(it gives a sweet whistle) and I guarantee you will leave everything else standing! Twisted Evil

The car doesn't take off all that bad, i had beaten a lancer and another Civic (EXi I think?) from a standstill but in the manual vs CVT talk, a Vi manual would be MUCH faster!
Another time i was beaten by a Mazda pickup (single cab, manual tranny). That guy had his tyres shirping up till 2nd gear. He pulled an entire car length on me! That was a bad beat Sad

I want to try the K&N but I have heard stories of the oil from those filters making their way up to the MAP sensor and causing some trouble...

well i like the little sports mode thing, especially like if i am running with another car and we are neck and neck and i just switch into sports mode you just hear that engine rev up louder and watch your rpm swing.

I always wondered if you are running a man who isnt so much inclined about cars and you do that to him if he would think that you punched on him, because in sports mode your car really picks up. Very Happy Just thinking stupid things again Embarassed

Ask fixables about his 60ft in a cvt turbo charged civic. He would avg 2.7/8(it may have been higher) where a manual civic non-turbo can easily do 2.4s. His civic use to run 15.5s, imagine with the lowered 60ft what it would have ran.

Yes yes, I must say, that lil CVT thingy is some fun.
And since Fixables show me the 'pump-the-pedal' thing, it was that much more fun.

But that 60' time is crucial these days; 3.0 sec 60' time jus doh cut it again. Ent Richard?

the fun in driving a performance car is in shifting gears, CVT / Automatics are for women.
Kobe Bryant spent almost a million US dollars to put an automatic trans in his wifey Ferrari 430
Modena.Do yourself a big favor convert to the shift passion.
