What can cause an auto tranny shifter to stick in Park? Happened today and only after switching on and off a few times, did the shifter engage the other gears. There were no prior symptoms, and it has not reoccurred since.Tranny fluid level is normal and tranny fluid is NOT due for change for a while yet.Car is non VTEC LEV Civic with CVT. What may be wrong or going wrong? Thanks in advance.
P.S. The car threw a code briefly but when the shifter freed up it came off.

Sounds like sensors on the tranny need changing

Had a similar problem with a P11 CVT

hey i hav a civic and the same problem had occurred its not the tranny but the brakes got mine fixed at the firm.

what they said it was a pin or some part that tends to get stuck and the car would not release gear unless this part is engaged its a safety feature, let them check the brakes cause with the part sticking the car would think that the brakes are still in place so it would not release the gear hence causing you to stick in park
looks to me that the civics has this problem cause you're not the only one who said this

slow323, it is called a shift lock. i had a B12 that had a shift lock on the brakes (so you had to press the brakes to activated the solenoid to remove the pin locking the shifter in place). however, the solenoid starting giving trouble and i had to use the bypass button (located behind the shifter) to manually push the pin out of the way. newer modle cars still use the brake solenoid on the shift lock, but also have a key to engage the shift lock as well.
