| why do some manufacturers, leave an extra 1 inch or so after cutting the front baffle to fit the woofer in place?..Does it hav somting to do wit the spider or jus an extra grip or hold, for the woofer for watever the reason... |

My word, i think you have to explain yourself better......
Well if you were to cut it 12" there wouldn't be anywhere to screw down the sub |

Imagine this waste of semen still givin car audio advice.
Don't be a cvnt Arion Khan. You can't even put proper sentences together/ use proper grammar.
FYI your question maybe the dumbest question ever asked in I.C.E. |

I thought you said mine was?
If so, I am offended by this thread.
anyways, bargin boi, I thnk what you refering to is counter sunk, like in this pic:
http://forums.trinituner.com/forums/posting.php?mode=quote&p=2699428
well to answer your question I assume it has to do with the design itself, take for example this sub: RF T112D4
the sub is a 12" & the cut out diameter is 10.8125"
take a look at this cross sectional view of the sub & you might understand why:

@ thread..

anyone ever notice how the coil is NOT centered inside the top plate on some subs? it shows that the sub was designed to have greater forward excursion than backward...
just an observation.. |

| 3stagevtec, how could that be though? The oscillating signal will have the same amplitude on compression and rarefaction, especially a sine wave. It would mean that the xmech/xmax is limited due to the backplate not so? |

agreed.. i've noticed this with alot of subs, same with my Audiopipe candy cone subs.. it's much easier to pull the cone forward than to push it back in, so it's definitely an intentional manufacturer design..
i know manufacturers can leave enough room to get even travel in both directions (e.g. bumped backplate etc).. but i'm really not sure why RF / Audiopipe etc don't do it..
maybe it has something to do with damping the cone movement or so.. |

actually the differences are either and over hung or under hung voice coil where the coil is either not fully in the magnetic gap or deep into it
depending on the overall sub design it yields different acoustic accuracy and responses |
