| yea tuners, my fog lamp relay is making a buzzing sound when i put on the switch and the lamps not lighting.. i know a relay is just supposed to 'click'. i even changed the relay and the new one doing the same thing and my fogs still not working.. any ideas on this?? |

| check to see if anything grounding off on the body of the car .......could cause it since it is a simple piece of equipment!! |

| Proper term is relay "chatter" and is usually caused by insufficient coil supply voltage. check to see coil operating voltage (usually marked on relay) and voltage being supplied to relay with a multimeter |

| change the relay and everything will be fine! your relay magnetic field isn't strong enough to hold the contacts in place. |

just pointing that out
I second the motion on checking your bulbs and wiring for any shorts or pinched wires and checking the relay socket for proper voltage and ground on the coil connections |

a couple questions tho....does the relay chatter only when u try your fogs with the engine running? or does it chatter regardless of whether the engine is on or not?
secondly, is it a factory installed fog system or an aftermarket one?
because I've seen a scenario where a loose connector on an aftermarket fog harness caused the relay to chatter and the bulbs to flicker...all it took was to check the supply voltage to the relay's coils...traced it back to a loose ground that vibrated only when the engine was running
if you have a multimeter, you could check it yourself...would even make it easier for the electrician if you already eliminated that possibility |

| its an aftermarket one n i hooked up the multimeter both when engine was on and off...got voltages both times.. and it was still chattering lol. |

you mean voltages on pin 85 or 86, right?
one connects to 12V (trigger) and one's a ground...ensure that u get your 12V on one pin and a good ground on the other.
This should help.
If you're getting good voltages and it still chattering, then I suspect your ground is acting up.
On-Topic, by chance anyone know where to get fused relays like these locally?

^^ what he have is a dual relay that was designed for headlights .......it acts jus like the universal relays but are externally fused so as if it blows the fuses can be replaced ....http://www.truckpartsproshop.com/dual_headlight_relay.html
Hook you can purchase those relays at radioshack.......also the motorist has them also but is rare with them ......
GOOLIE ......if you can tap off your relay you can do it manually .......pins 87,86,85,30.
87 goes to headlight
86 is your power input/activation
85 is your ground
30 is your positive
take a power wire and run straight to pin 30 as normal, and take a same 12v tap and drop it on pin 86 and if you could reground pin 85 and see if the problem still persists(it should clear up). if it does change the cable from pin 87 to bulb and see what happens. if it stll persists swap your lamps with a normal lamp(12v) bulb and see what happens. doing this you will see where and what is giving trouble and will be able to get rid of it !!! |

| coil voltage on relay insufficient to keep contact closed. it therefore must be either the ground of the trigger acting up [85 or 86] |

Relay chatter means
1) In a DC circuit as in your car ...the relay IS getting enough juice to pull...BUT as it pulls the current drain of your FOGS are causing the voltage to DROP on the relay coil....causing it to let go.....
2) As it lets go the fogs drain stops and the relay voltage goes up and pulls the relay again....giving continuous chatter chatter.
.
Your solution is to verify your contacts on the relay coil supply .
Then verify your fogs are not overloading the wiring and causing the voltage drop. Easy to tell...disconnect the fogs and listen for the relay to pull. If still chattering its not the fogs wiring.
Lastly ...use a heavier gauge wire to run the relay coil. Last possibility, remember, as the relay coil heats up its resistance drops and increases current drain which can induce the relay to release if your wire gauge is at their power limit.
It goes without saying that u have checked the switch that runs the relay? |
