I drove a 1996 accent for 10 years and ~343,000 km without any problems. It was a manual transmission car like the one that you are buying. I believe only the automatic transmission cars gave problems. The only major maintenance I did on the car was change the clutch, pressure plate and release bearing at ~180,000 km, re-build the engine at 230,000 km and change the dampers a short while after that.

The only real complaint I had was with the cracking of the hard plastic dashboard. But I think the 2001 model has a vinyl skin over a foam core dashboard, so you should not encounter this problem.

My recommendations to you are to follow the manufacturer's service schedule and to use original parts for suspension and major engine related work. The cost of OEM parts at N&M, for at least the model that I had, was not that much higher than substitute parts bought outside of the firm.
