there are all kinds of sharks in our waters, Trinidad is basically on the edges of the Caribbean and Atlantic oceans, so sharks pass through our waters all the time... but there has not been any reported shark attacks recently to my knowledge, i try not to think about in the water, so stop studying that.
this may sound kind of out of time but i ask everyone this question when they ask me about surfing... are you a strong swimmer and i don't mean doggy paddle... this is the most important thing in surfing you must be comfortable in the water first and foremost... if not get some lessons. about the boards, if you are just starting out, get a second hand board to start with, as a learner you will damage the boards and you don't want to spend all that money especially if you don't like surfing in the end... i've seen many of my friends start only to quit shortly after. as a beginner you could go surfing anywhere maracas, balandra, blanchiesses it doesn't matter, you should get accustomed to paddling and duck diving the board and getting to your feet. as you get better you can check out other spots... most people tend to surf on the north coast and east coast... some of the more popular spots are san souci (beach break north coast), salybia (northeast) and rough side (balandra bay east coast). surfing is great fun, the best surfer is the person with the biggest smile on their face. |

most sharks are deadly... they have sharp teeth and could easily take you or me apart, but in most cases they aren't really interested in humans unless provoked. |

if sharks are your concern then surfing is not for u alpine
i suggest you get surfers you know to go out with you to show you the ropes
if you just go by yourself jus so ..u might encounter a lil difficulty
damiens and d2 offers lil vibes for those not willing to take the east trek and on a north swell gets pretty decent |

jeff, yeah Damiens and D2 are nice calm spots to get acquainted...
I'm glad someone mentioned paddling and duck diving though...if you can't get really really good at both, you'll never catch a wave
Any of you guys besides Ignis surfs?
Allyuh remember the first time you tried to paddle out? or your first real slam?
I got my first real slam in Big Bay...on a seriously fleckin big day to boot 6'-8' was still a noobie (still am actually lol) and a paddle mih life out and didn't stand up in time, man that lip plant my arse firm on the sea bed and i feel like i got stick in a spin cycle in some industrial sized washing machine yes
I come out like: "what de mudda cnut was DAT about hoss!?!?"
Paddnas just started ketchin kixx |

Surf Spots:
Proper east coast has NO waves that are surfable, if any, they will only occur under HEAVY ocean swells and they will break really far out in the ocean as Mayaro/Manzan side has no reef structure to cause breaks.
Even if by a slim chance mayaro does get a good swell, toco and north coast will be 1000x better due to the same swell as reef structures their aren't the best in the world, but they are at least existent compared to proper east coast.
Spots up on toco side:
Roughside/Calmside (Balandra)
Breach Break/Big Bay (San Souci)
Gran Riviere
Rampanalgas
Shark River
Matelot
|
hmm, if you surf you should know better
Balandra (calm side and rough side are on the east coast)
there are also some splended surf spots on the east coast, Bay road, Outer Island, Satellite's, Tompe and others...
I would advise if you are now learning to surf, buy a cheap (cause you'll prbably break your first board learning to falla nd stand up etc) used board (the bigger the better for balance) and go las cuevas or somewhere like that where the surf is small and you can practice getting up on the board in the white waTER and paddling around and duck diving etc (paddling around int eh water and learning to balance/paddle fast and hard to catch waves is wone of the biggest hurdles most people face before even standing up on a wave)
from there, you'll start to venture further and have more fun
.. Dude |

^C'mon man... i meant east coast liek manzan and mayaro...
I surfed Balandra on Monday, roughside was sheit and calmside was flat like a pancake
Ended up in San Souci, Beach Break had some decent waves, small but clean, lotsa good lefts...nice practice for goofy footers like mihself!
What you said about paddling around and getting that balance on the board and re-adjusting yourself after duck diving is the hardest thing about learning to surf imo...thats the thing you'll spend most if not all your time learning to do and perfect before you even think about standing on the board.
Learn to swim like a goddamn fish! |

fire coral is not a nice thing when you have a big mama taking it out of your back in tobago and stiching you up. |

irvin my favorite wave, but the fire coral ain't too friendly... followed closely by shark river... only if bay road and outer island would break more often... possibly the best left in Trinidad when it actually is breaking. |

^Cosign on the best left ..i'm a goofy footer, so i live for a good left breakin wave
Fire coral is the facking worst Never had the displeasure of falling on any but I witnessed some paddnas take some nasty falls on the reef and came back with their entire back lacerated just like millions of deep paper cut type scrapes...first time i see big men cry like that ( ) *yes it's quite funny to see* |

man like Rio hahaha a.k.a. breeegooo!!! (RIO-57 on the hood) yeah he's in the game long time, he from the old school... always up in grande river. thats another good place to get started as it usually smaller than most other breaks, except on a big north swell. |
