Need some help, the speed and tach meter in the AE 101 (local 1.6 carb engine) is not functioning properly. The mechanic said that he is not seeing any cable to change, that is probably an electronic thing. Who can repair this? Or any advise on DIY repair

trinish, u get the car like this? look for something like a bicycle cable coming from the transmission to the back of the firewall. but if u open ur dash and get a look directly behind the instrument panel u would surely know if its electric or cable type.

I ain't never seen no AE101 with a cable speedo...even teh older carby ones like the one the OP's talking about

and I ain't seen nothing in the first post to suggest a 4a-ge was installed (all of which the speedometers are also electronic)

thing is, it's carb'd so no error codes to pull to know if it's a sensor or what, but I don't think it's that drastic

trinish, first off, change that mechanic...he ain't know what he doing...clearly...
the problem can be as simple as loose or corroded connectors, faulty sensors, faulty harness (old car nuh..like what 16 years or so?) or an instrument cluster that has served it's useful life (up to a couple months ago, my factory tachometer finally gave up so I got one off a foreign used cluster and I'm good to go again)

if it's both the speedo AND tach on the fritz, then I suspect the instrument cluster needs changing...scour the parts places for a foreign used one and swap 'em out in less than 15mins...let us know how it goes
